Job Description:

Bunker Hill Community College, a vibrant and diverse higher education learning environment in Boston, Massachusetts, is seeking a Coordinator of the Veteran Center within the Division of Student Affairs. The Coordinator will work directly with Veteran students from recruitment to the college, orientation, certification of benefits, and through graduation. The successful candidate will be outgoing, with strong interpersonal communication skills and demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative team that interacts with a wide range of stakeholders in a diverse community. It is essential that the Coordinator is able to build strong relationships with external agencies such as Warrior Scholar, Home Base and other Veterans-based programs to assure BHCC Veterans have full access to advanced programs. The Coordinator should have a strong record of developing programming on a College campus and building support network for students. The Coordinator shall create a multi-faceted approach to increase student Veteran retention through evidence-based practices in engagement. This full-time position reports to the Dean of Students



Specific Responsibilities:



  • Directly supervises Veterans Services full-time and part-time staff.
  • Creates an open and welcoming environment for in the Veterans Center that enhances the engagement and retention of students.
  • Develops a positive relationship with students to support student success.
  • Is an active member of the Campus Orientation Committee and provides leadership for Veterans Orientation.
  • Facilitates the building of strong collaborative relationships with external partners that can enhance opportunities for Veteran students.
  • Serves as the formal leader of the Veterans Center internally and externally.
  • Actively educates faculty, staff and students about the unique strengths and experiences of Veteran Students.
  • Makes referrals to Senior Academic Counselor, Academic Advising and other key campus services by assessing student needs and making timely warm-hand offs to assure success.
  • Develops strategic plans to increase the retention and success of Veteran students.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Admissions by assisting with external recruitment events, developing recruitment strategies, and enhancing a strong web presence to increase the number of Veteran students at BHCC.
  • Is an active member of the Student Leadership and Engagement efforts including the development of a Veteran Mentors program.
  • Provides leadership for strategic planning to assess programs and procedures to assure the use of best practices in working with Veteran students.
  • Utilizes Chickering's Vector's to inform student program development, alignment with Institutional Learning Outcomes and the College's mission.
  • Stays current on national best practices in Student Affairs at Urban Community Colleges and applies these principles.
  • Works collaboratively with campus leadership within the campus community and the Boston- area to increase the retention and success of Students of Color, LGBTQA students, and First Generation Students.
  • Provides on-going training for academic advisors to assure coordination of registration, certification, and updates of issues facing Veteran students.
  • Active member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team attending weekly meetings and professional development plan activities.
  • Drafts end of the year reports on all educational efforts and prepare Annual Unit Plans for all offices in concert with direct Supervisor.
  • Ultimately responsible for assuring full compliance with all federal, state and certification requirements.
  • Promotes and maintains positive responsive internal and external community relations.
  • Participates on College-wide committees as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required/assigned.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Social Work or Counseling.
  • 5 years' experience in Student Affairs, Social Work or Veterans Affairs.
  • Previous experience supervising student workers.
  • Is able to work in a highly-collaborative reflective practitioner environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to students in crisis, engage in threat assessment and refer to external resources.
  • Demonstrated professional knowledge in best practices for behavioral intervention teams.
  • Cultural awareness and competency demonstrated by working with and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities including ethnicity, race, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, and veteran's status as well as those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.
  • Competent in MS Word and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $59,939.00-$62,410.00 Actual Salary Will Be Commensurate With Education & Experience in Accordance with MCCC/MTA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Full state Benefits.
