Job Description:
The Military & Veterans Services Academic Counselor is a full-time, year-round position that will serve as an advisor and advocate to military, veteran and dependent students. The counselor will provide military, veteran and dependent students with admissions, academic, career, transfer, financial aid, and counseling; coordinate and schedule workshops; refer students to external organizations and agencies; track and monitor students' progress; coordinate the student mentor program; prepare program and budget reports; act as liaison between students, faculty, and administrators; coordinate program evaluation; and participate in college activities aimed at improving the campus climate for veterans students. This will include military and veteran friendly services and an increased awareness on campus to the educational challenges and needs of this population.

Responsibilities and Duties:
Serves as Veterans' Affairs Counselor (i.e. – serves as a certifying official to all military, veteran
and dependent students; verifies enrollment status on weekly basis and updates Veterans Administration Regional Office; provides academic advisement to veterans; counsels students in G.I. benefit procedures; organizes and conducts information workshops; serves as liaison to armed service recruiters from all branches; maintains Veterans Administration records).
Coordinate the daily operations of the Veterans Center including the supervision, training and evaluation of part-time staff including the college's certifying official(s) as well as work-study students.

Provide coverage and services as appropriate to other campus sites (Canton and Middleborough).

Collaborate with the College Communications to develop promotional material for outreach to community organizations, prospective military and veteran students, and the College community both on-line and in print.

Serves as enrollment and academic advisor to military, veteran and dependent students (i.e. – serves as first point of contact for prospective students and advises incoming students through enrollment process; participates in phases of student registration; executes GradesFirst campaigns, phone and other email outreach to aid in student success; evaluates Joint Military Service and Community College of the Air Force transcripts for transfer credit; advises students in course selection and registration; conducts conferences and makes recommendations; assists in creating, planning, and conducting new student orientations; refers students to appropriate support services and resources).

Performs administrative tasks associated with department activities (i.e. – researches/assists student with college withdrawal appeals; creates/designs handouts and assists in editing copy for college catalog, student handbook and other publications; maintains student logs; develops and administers departmental budget; produces a monthly and annual report to summarize activities in the community and on campus; develops and maintains departmental strategic goals,
communication plan, policy and procedure manuals, reference and training materials, etc.).
Interacts with various agencies/individuals (i.e. – attends meetings and participates on committees;
assists in coordinating commencement ceremonies; assists in processing commencement awards; communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, students, faculty members, employers, community organizations, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals to coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems). Identify external community-based organizations serving Veterans and establish a network to recruit veterans to the college.
Maintains professional knowledge in applicable areas (i.e. – maintains a working knowledge of assigned area; researches new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions).

Provides career and life planning counseling to students (i.e. – creates/conducts career/life planning workshops; produces, organizes, and updates career/life planning resources and handouts; maintains listings of current jobs and employment opportunities; promotes, markets, and advertises student development programs/events).

Streamline communications and processes to provide a more seamless transition for military and veteran students to the college. Assess unique military and veteran student needs and collaborate with other college departments to implement teaching, learning and support strategies to increase student success. Consult with military and veteran students regarding their academic concerns and assist them in accessing internal and external resources to address their needs; serve as a student advocate.

Develop programs and activities for members of the College community that increase their understanding of the needs of military and veteran students.

Maintain knowledge of federal and state legislation, rules, policies and procedures pertaining to military and veteran student benefits and provide training and resources for the College's certifying officials to ensure compliance with all federal and state rules and regulations governing military and veteran student benefits.

Maintain records in conjunction with other certifying officials that comply with federal and state requirements, and prepare records for corresponding audits. Maintain data and prepare reports on military and veteran student enrollment and success.

Pursue external funding opportunities to enhance services to military and veteran students, in collaboration with the College Grant Office.

Maintains an in-depth understanding of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974) in order to explain this regulation, as needed, to students, external representatives, parents, faculty and staff

Participates in development and administration of campus policies and procedures.

Serves on Enrollment Management Team and college committees and task forces as directed;
attends associated meetings and events.

Performs other duties as required to enhance success of students and college initiatives.

Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, or closely related field; with three (3) years of experience and/or training that includes career counseling, career placement, academic advising, veterans counseling, and records maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; experience working with Veterans Affairs educational benefits; experience with technology platforms used in higher education.

Full-time benefited Massachusetts Community College Council (MCCC) position.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday; requires some early mornings, nights and weekends.

Salary: Salary range $49,771.00 - $55,000.00 Grade 4. Salary is commensurate and based on the MCCC Classification Study.
