Associate Director of Advising, Academic Achievement Center
Department Summary:
The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides academic advising and learning assistance support to undergraduate students. The AAC also houses the Office of Disability Resources and the Testing Services Center. The AAC strives to provide students with quality academic services and resources that propel them toward successful and timely degree completion.?
Position Summary:
The Associate Director oversees the First Year Advising Program and other centralized academic advising initiatives. The Associate Director works to ensure the delivery of quality academic advising services to undergraduate students at Bridgewater State University that includes a roster of first year, transfer and academically at-risk students.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Director of the Academic Achievement Center.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises all professional advising staff and faculty advisors on alternative professional responsibility (APR) appointments.
This is an exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

Essential Duties:
CORE DUTIES:
1. Designs and implements the advising curriculum for first year, entering transfer students, those who are undecided about their major, and students who are in academic jeopardy and participating in the Emerging Scholars Programs.
2. Manages all aspects of the Haughey First Year Advising and Emerging Scholar programs offered through the Center, including coordinating mandatory group advising sessions, designing specialized programs for academically at-risk students, managing a referral process for students to get connected to academic support services.
3. Designs and conducts annual assessments of all advising programs and services, runs advising data reports in Argos, and creates year end reports on advising programs and services. Other reports and assessments will also be written as needed.
3. Supervises all aspects of the academic component of orientation for new first year students. Recruits and hires faculty advisors; designs and facilitates advising trainings; works collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, Transfer Central and New Student and Family Programs to coordinate the logistics of each orientation program.
4. Responsible for evaluating all new first year student academic records for placement into appropriate levels of writing, math, foreign languages, and other specialized courses. Utilizes the Banner student information system and Argos Reports to manage this process.
5. Works collaboratively with faculty on APR in the Center in their respective areas, including but not limited to faculty development for advising.
6. Responsible for developing new programs and methodologies to interface learning assistance services with academic advising services.
7. Responsible for coordination and implementation of protocols followed by the advising staff including academic counseling for university withdrawals, medical withdrawals, and appeals for late withdrawals.
8. Manages the recruitment, interview process, training and evaluation of 20+ graduate assistants assigned to the Center.
9. Acts as a liaison, when asked by the Director, between the Center and various departments and serve on campus-wide committees including the Academic Standards Committee.
10. Designs and facilitates ongoing professional development and training to all staff advisors, academic counselor graduate assistants, faculty advisors who work in the Center, and peer advisors on advising theory and best practices, academic policies, and academic planning procedures in DegreeWorks.
11. Undertakes research and program development related to academic advising as assigned.
12. Functions as a team member of the Academic Achievement Center staff in the development and implementation of processes necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the department and the University.
13. Carries out other professional tasks, duties and programs as assigned by the Director.
Required Qualifications:
1. Minimum requirement of a masters degree in counseling, student personnel teaching, or other related degree.
2. A minimum of five years experience working in higher education and significant experience in direct delivery of academic advising services.
3. Excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills required. Good interpersonal skills are essential.
4. Understanding of higher education principles, practices, and procedures.
5. Demonstrated ability to work in stressful situations. Position requires sensitivity to human concerns, flexibility, patience, professional integrity and concern for students needs in a demanding academic context. Experience in program coordination, administration, supervision, or similar leadership role.
6. Previous supervisory and program management experience.
7. Understanding of advising technology and student information systems and willingness to learn new systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
1.Previous experience working with DegreeWorks academic planning and degree audit system, Argos Reports, and the Banner student information system.
2. Experience in public higher education.

Salary Range: $65,000 to $70,000
