Position Summary:
The Science Writer is responsible for conceptualizing, writing and editing a range of news stories, feature articles, blog posts, and other materials about science and research initiatives at Northeastern University. Reporting to the News Editor, the Science Writer will produce content for a broad range of the university’s print and online channels, including news@Northeastern, the research blog iNSolution, and social media. He/she will focus on communicating research efforts conducted by faculty and students, often in collaboration with outside agencies and industry partners. Topics may range from scientific projects undertaken by a variety of disciplines and research areas, ranging from the highly technical through the social sciences (i.e.: nanotechnology, engineering, psychology and human behavior, drug delivery/discovery, network science, etc.).
He/she is expected to thoroughly research and understand complex information and quickly translate it for a range of audiences. He/she must have excellent writing and editing skills, the ability to work well with a diverse group of people, the ability to take positive and proactive approaches to tasks and the ability to work in a collaborative environment. He/she must show exceptional attention to detail and produce clear and accurate copy – often under short deadlines.
The Science Writer must meet regularly with established sources in academic and administrative departments throughout campus; attend pertinent university events and meetings; read relevant newspapers, periodicals, and Web sites. He/she will develop and cultivate information sources across a decentralized university campus and throughout many constituencies.
Duties/responsibilities include, but are not limited to, researching information thoroughly and accurately, working closely with administrators, students, faculty and other members of the campus community, interviewing subjects for stories, writing and editing material assigned by the Department of External Affairs, including projects for Marketing and Communications and Government Relations. The Science Writer will collaborate with directors and department staff to achieve communication goals.
Must have:

•Knowledge of scientific issues and trends, particularly those that are common in a large research university.

•Strong writing and editing skills and the ability to write and edit quickly and with superb quality.

•Ability to critically evaluate information and assess news value.

•Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Must be available for frequent night and weekend work projects. Flexibility and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment are required.

Qualifications:
Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.

Minimum of 3-5 years of experience writing and editing scientific news and feature stories with three years of focused writing on science-related topics, experience in higher education is a plus.

Excellent writing, editing, and interpersonal communication skills; strong copy-editing skills with a basic command of AP style; experience working with a content management system a plus.
