Northeast Region Manager

R Street Institute

Northeast Region Manager

The R Street Institute—a free-market think tank headquartered in Washington and with regional offices around the country—is seeking a Northeast region manager to be based in or near Boston. This position will report to the associate vice president for state programs.

Candidates should be able to support and serve as a regional ambassador for all R Street programs. Initial work will focus on R Street’s integrated harm-reduction portfolio, which is focused on a range of public-health policies designed to lessen the negative social and physical consequences associated with harmful behaviors, both legal and illegal, but with an emphasis on tobacco issues. That project that will involve educating Massachusetts policymakers, particularly at the local level, about harm reduction broadly. The position also will involve engaging on a range of other topics including energy, technology, criminal justice, and property and casualty insurance.

We want someone with particular experience in Massachusetts and will only consider candidates who have such experience. The ideal regional manager will have a strong knowledge of both public policy and an extensive network of contacts in Massachusetts politics. A good candidate will be a fantastic networker, a very quick study on a wide range of policy areas and able to deal with new situations in a creative manner.

Responsibilities

  • Educate state and local lawmakers and executive branch officials about R Street policy positions on harm reduction and a variety of other topics.
  • Build ideologically broad coalition partnerships with other organizations to promote R Street messages.
  • Arrange speaking, meeting and legislative testimony opportunities for R Street senior policy staff and R Street associates.
  • Write papers for publication by R Street and others, as well as pieces for the popular and ideological press.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least three years of experience in state/local politics, at least some of which should be in Massachusetts. This might take the form of work as a legislative staffer, a campaign worker, a candidate, a lobbyist, a trade association professional or other similar work.
  • Demonstrated experience and contacts in government in Massachusetts and, if possible, the Legislature.
  • Excellent writing ability, ideally demonstrated by a record of published work.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Knowledge of, and connections with, civil-society groups in Massachusetts.

Candidates who believe they are truly well-qualified are encouraged to apply even if they don’t precisely meet all of the qualifications above. For example, someone with excellent contacts in local politics but no published work would still be a strong candidate. It’s unlikely that academic credentials alone can substitute for work experience.

While this job does allow candidates to work from home and have some control of their specific hours, it is a full-time job inconsistent with any other employment. People who hold minor local elected office may be considered, but high-profile political positions and aspirations above very minor local office are not consistent with this job. This job will involve a fair amount of travel, largely in Massachusetts and elsewhere in the Northeast, but may involve travel elsewhere in the United States. It may also require unusual work hours. Candidates should expect and be able to spend at least some nights away from home.

R Street strives to provide a compensation package superior to those at other think tanks and nonprofits. In addition to a highly competitive salary, we provide health insurance entirely paid by the employer (even for families); a wellness benefit; employer-subsidized mobile phones benefit; 401(k) contributions with no employee match required; and an exceptionally generous vacation policy.

R Street does not discriminate on the basis of age, sex, race, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation, era of military service, gender identity or anything else that’s illegal, immoral or stupid to use as a basis for hiring.

While we impose no political litmus test for this job or any other, candidates should be comfortable communicating free-market messages, as well as our work on harm reduction, particularly in the tobacco realm. As such, applicants are strongly advised to review our webpage and, in particular, our work on harm reduction, to assure they are comfortable with our work and our approach to it.

We currently plan to accept applications for this job until May 26. Candidates in whom we are interested will be contacted for telephone interviews, which will be conducted on a rolling basis. This will be followed by asking selected candidates to complete a writing test. In-person interviews will be held in Boston in mid June 2017. Candidates who believe they are highly qualified and haven’t heard back from us should follow up.

To apply, please send us a resume in Microsoft W ord or PDF, along with a cover letter pasted into the body of an email. The email address for applications is neregionmgrcandidates@rstreet.org.
