Assistant Director, Public Relations - Department of Communications and Marketi

Tufts University Public Relations is looking for either a PR pro with a science background or a writer with science experience to join the PR team on the university s Boston Health Sciences campus, with a particular focus on science and research communications. Background or experience in science is necessary. Hands-on experience with media is preferred. A bachelor s degree is required, and additional experience/accreditation, particularly in medical or science writing/editing, is preferred, as is higher education experience.

Our new team member will write and edit press releases, fact sheets, etc.; evaluate and respond to media requests; pitch stories to reporters, editors, producers and columnists, including top-tier national and international media, regional media and trade publications; and participate in the development and execution of public relations strategy. The Assistant Director also provides advice and expertise to faculty, deans and administrators on public relations issues and concerns.


Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
  • BA/BS.
  • 5 years of PR experience in science-related field or 5 years of writing experience in a science-related field.
  • Top-notch writing skills.
  • Interest in the news media; excellent judgment and news sense.
  • Strong research, editing verbal, organizational, analytical skills.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft office, PowerPoint, Paint or Photoshop.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Experience in life sciences or medicine/health care/nutrition.
  • Ability to translate complex scientific research and science policy into understandable content for reporters.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience in multimedia.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Occasional travel to professional events; occasional travel among Tufts campuses; irregular hours as driven by news cycle; occasional evening or weekend work.
