Job Description and Responsibilities:

 

The Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University seeks an assistant or associate professor to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in media law and mass communication, as well as conduct research in their area of specialty. This is a nine-month tenure-track or tenured appointment beginning in fall 2019.

 

This faculty member may supervise master’s theses and non-thesis option projects, as well as doctoral dissertations and, occasionally, undergraduate honors theses. They will also develop a portfolio of service activities, which preferably will include support for the Manship School’s efforts to promote diversity and could include co-advising LSU’s undergraduate mock trial team.

 

The Manship School offers a dual Master’s of Mass Communication/Juris Doctor degree in cooperation with the Paul M. Hebert School of Law as well as a pre-law undergraduate program that allows students to complete a bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor in six total years (3+3). This appointment will be made entirely in the Manship School of Mass Communication.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

Ph.D. in Mass Communication, Juris Doctor or related degree (A.B.D. candidates may be considered); promise of a productive research agenda that will yield significant scholarly publications in media law, mass communication, digital media or related disciplines; teaching experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Professional experience in media law or related field; experience with or potential for external grant funding.

This position provides the opportunity to mentor students while engaging in an active research environment. The School is enhanced by support from its Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs, which includes opportunities to develop programming for the Press Law and Democracy Project, focused on the promotion, protection and study of the free press clause of the First Amendment in a 21st century context. In addition, the School fosters a lively and productive research environment through many funded professorships. The School also offers unparalleled research facilities, such as the Public Policy Research Lab, Media Effects Lab and Social Media Analysis & Creation Lab.
