Position Overview

The University of Kansas owns and operates a Cessna Citation CJ4 (light jet) and owns a fraction of a Phenom 100 (very light jet), which is operated by Executive AirShare. These aircraft are operated for the purpose of meeting the business transportation needs of the University. The pilot's primary responsibility is the safe operation of all aircraft flights in the University s CJ4.


Job Description

Cessna Citation CJ4
Principal Duties and Responsibilities 70%
This position will be one of three Captain positions in the Citation CJ4. The primary duty and responsibility of this position is to perform the duties of captain as they relate to training, mission planning, and flying passengers to their destinations in a safe and efficient manner. Responsibilities include meeting all scheduled times for transporting passengers to assigned destinations, both in state and out of state. Passengers are personnel and students from the Lawrence campus, Medical Center and other state agencies. Responsibility includes compliance with all FAA regulations and KU Aviation Services standard operating procedures.

Manager & Administrative Duties 25%
This pilot will also be responsible for management of Safety & Security Programs and act as specialist for integration of Information Technology as it relates to flying operations. Duties will include attendance at periodic conferences to stay abreast of industry safety and security issues; management of the department's safety management system for the director; oversight and upkeep of the hangar surveillance system; coordination with KU Public Safety, as necessary, on security of doors at hangar, and with surveillance system upkeep. Oversee the upkeep of Information Technology devices, i.e. iPhones, iPads, to include standardization of the iPads used during flight in the cockpit. Ensure timely update of Navigational Databases in aircraft flight management systems and IT devices.
Assist the Chief Pilot in updating the operations manual. Assist the Maintenance and Training Manager with the maintenance of the CJ4 aircraft. Perform updates to navigational databases on the aircraft. Assist in the preparation and maintenance of aircraft status records and reports. Assist with cleaning the aircraft and maintaining the hangar and supplies as necessary. Comply with any other duties assigned by the Director of Aviation Services as deemed reasonable and necessary for safe & efficient flight operations.

Flight Preparation 5%
Confirm the maintenance status of the aircraft, check weather conditions, weight & balance status well in advance of the trip, and communication with passengers on any necessary impact or restrictions. Develop alternate plans as required for airfield, fuel stops, etc., and coordinate changes as necessary. Ensure that the aircraft is properly fueled and a thorough pre-flight inspection is accomplished. File necessary flight plans with the FAA. Comply with all FAA regulations. Store and secure the aircraft at the end of each day. Conduct a thorough post-flight inspection and report mechanical deficiencies to the chief pilot and maintenance manager. Enter invoice data into the computer, which includes pre-mission and post-mission paperwork and coordination with flight department as specified in the flight operations procedures manual.



Required Qualifications

  • Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) multi-engine certificate, and current FAA first or second-class medical.
  • Thorough understanding of FAA flying and maintenance requirements.
  • Must have 2,000 pilot-in-command flying hours with at least 100 hours as pilot-in-command of multi-engine airplane, and subject to the approval of our current insurance carrier.
  • Previous job experience exercising good public relations skills and to maintain confidentiality as evidenced by application materials.
  • Previous experience communicating effectively with staff and customers as evidenced through application materials and interviews.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional pilot-in-command flight hours, recent factory approved flight/ground training and recent flight time in Jet aircraft.
  • Willingness to relocate to Lawrence, Kansas.
