Motion Designer & Editor



Position Overview

The motion designer works as part of the digital media team with KU Marketing Communications and is responsible for creating motion graphics and other animations for a variety of video marketing projects. This person works within creative and strategic guidelines to support marketing objectives for the office, partner, and/or university at large. The motion designer collaborates with the digital media (video) team to create compelling motion graphic assets, and also to provide editing and color work as needed. This person works with the digital media team to produce high-quality work that meets or exceeds industry standards.


Job Description

40% Motion Design
Create and animate graphic assets that support and integrate into a variety of video projects for a variety of partners. Create assets from scratch and use pre-existing design concepts from the Marketing Communications creative team. Create fully animated videos and individual assets that can be used in a variety of contexts, such as other videos, social media executions, etc.

30% Video Editing
Study scripts to become familiar with project concepts and requirements. Edit videos to insert music, dialogue, and sound effects. Arrange edits into sequences and correct errors. Select and combine the most effective shots of each scene to form a logical and smooth story. Suggest or select specific audio, visual effects, and music. Consult with the creative team throughout the post-production process to ensure a high-quality end product.

10% Color Grading/Finishing
Conduct primary and secondary color correction for finalized videos. Adjust color grading for style.

10% Produce Videos
Actively participate in brainstorming exercises with team members and clients. Develop compelling stories in different ways to appeal to a variety of audiences. Related tasks include researching video opportunities, scouting locations, prepping equipment for fieldwork, and restoring communal equipment.

10% Other Duties
Attend staff and partner meetings. Plan, strategize, trouble-shoot, and seek solutions for a wide range of partners and issues. Work collegially with staff and partners in a team environment. As needed, prepare scripts, shooting agenda, and job-status.

Required Qualifications

  • An associate's (or more advanced) degree and 3 years of full-time experience (or equivalent) in producing professional video projects.
  • A portfolio of video samples spanning a range production values that demonstrate superior abilities in advertising and marketing ideas, motion design, color work, and that promote good strategic communications.


  • Preferred Qualifications

  • An excellent portfolio that shows evidence of creative content generation and excellent design/editing skills, including a demo reel.
  • Experience with the entire Adobe CS suite.
  • Experience with color correction.
  • Professional experience working with video and audio for use on the web, including shooting video on-location.
  • Experience in advertising, visual communication, and/or other brand development.
  • A working knowledge of Mac OS.
  • Strong communication skills and a superior customer service attitude.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience giving persuasive, effective presentations to clients/partners and teammates.
  • A team player, but one with self-initiative, a strong work ethic, and a positive attitude.
  • Self-motivated with strong organization and attention to detail, as well as the desire to contribute to issue-identification and problem-solving.
  • Able to respond to direction and adapt to frequent changes in project tactics, creative strategy, and/or deadlines.
