Research Associate - IACP

Research Associate

IACP

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has been an innovator in policing theory, policy, and practice since its inception in 1893. Over the past decade, IACP has accomplished groundbreaking work on researcher-practitioner partnerships that ensures that police policies and practices are driven by reliable research. Now, IACP seeks to take what may be the most dramatic step in moving 'science to the street' - by partnering with the University of Cincinnati to create the Center for Police Research and Policy. Supported by funding from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF), the Center will provide America's 18,000 federal, state, county, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies with cutting edge research, translated into actionable recommendations to answer urgent policing issues, drive sound policy, and advance criminal justice practice by substantially narrowing the gap between academic research and police policy. Ultimately it will be the essential vehicle to move the growing field of evidence based policing from campuses to law enforcement practitioners and the communities they serve across the United States.

The Center is a joint mission between IACP and UC's School of Criminal Justice to embody the ideal police/researcher collaboration. To that end, the Center will immediately engage in three tasks: (1) develop a national model policy for conducting police research; (2) launch three randomized control trials (RCTs) targeting urgent policing issues; and (3) translate existing academic research on issues that impact law enforcement policy and practice into actionable recommendations for the field. The Center will continuously identify, prioritize and launch new research efforts of significance to law enforcement effectiveness. This position is funded by a grant that ends September 30, 2019. The position may continue if future funding is secured.

The Position - Research Associate

Using their significant experience executing criminal justice research and program evaluation in the field, this position will work closely with the Center's Executive Director to coordinate and oversee all quantitative data collection, data storage, and analyses related to the Center's work. This will include data gathering and coding, construction of databases, maintenance of data security, and archiving data. The Research Associate will analyze data using statistical software and data visualization programs. The selected applicant will be provided the appropriate equipment and office space and required to work at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. Some travel to various research sites and IACP headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia will be required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess a Master's Degree or PhD in criminal justice, statistics, or a related field. The successful candidate should possess a minimum of five years' experience with research using large databases, data storage, and data management. Strong statistical and methodological skills are essential. Key attributes for a successful candidate include excellent statistical and methodological skills, along with strong writing skills; familiarity with the management of datasets and presentation of data; and familiarity with the use of statistical analysis software, including but not limited to ArcGIS, R, SAS, Stata, and/or SPSS.
