Assc/Assi Dir of Career & Professional Development

Associate/Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development Bastian Family Career Center, Knox College

The Associate/Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development will envision, develop, market and manage a full spectrum of innovative career exploration and professional development programming initiatives designed to help prepare Knox students for life after Knox. He/she will work with Career and Professional Development team to help ensure success of all such initiatives.  As an integral member of a small office team, the Associate Director will also deliver one-on-one assistance to students and alumni for all aspects of preparation for successful pursuit of internship opportunities, and job and graduate/professional school searches. Position reports to and works closely with Executive Director of Career Development. Note: Associate or Assistant level of the position will depend on the experience level of the selected candidate.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Program ideation and development, focused on holistic career and professional development; engaging Knox alumni and recruiters in program delivery when feasible
  • Work with Executive Director to develop a comprehensive program development strategy, managing the strategy to ensure students and alumni have access to relevant and timely career programs and resources
  • Lead the creation and development of an online self-service career and professional preparation content resource
  • Assist students and alumni with career-related decision-making through career assessments and exploration, experiential programs and opportunities, networking, and targeted programming
  • Advise students and alumni in-person and via phone, email, virtual media, for career choice, resumes, cover letters, job and internship search strategies, recruiting preparation, graduate and professional school preparation, web-based resources, career changes, and professional development topics
  • Build and maintain relationships and proactively partner with faculty, staff and student groups to market, and when appropriate co-deliver, initiatives and programs
  • Keep up-to-date on trends and issues affecting the future of the world of work
  • Participate in regional and/or national associations pertinent to our work, including partner associations as Knox representative for career fairs and initiatives
  • Assist Executive Director with employer engagement and recruiting
  • Lead the gathering and reporting of annual student outcomes, and the continual assessment of the effectiveness and satisfaction with our programs, resources and initiatives 
  • Participate in student development initiatives and programs as part of Knox Student Development team
  • Occasional travel required for career and association programs and events as well as some evening and weekend hours
  • Lead the Center in the Executive Director’s absence

The Perfect Candidate

  • Bachelor's degree required, relevant Master's degree preferred. 
  • Experience working with college students or recent graduates is a plus 
  • Experience working with liberal arts students and appreciation for the liberal arts is a plus
  • Self-starter, with the ability to coach and motivate others
  • Proven program planning and execution skills with well-developed attention to details
  • Excellent writing, public speaking, networking and interpersonal communication skills with ability to build rapport with students, communicate effectively with campus constituencies, leverage relationships with alumni, parents, faculty, and staff 
  • Facility/comfort with technology-based search and networking tools such Handshake and LinkedIn 
  • Vision, creativity, imagination and a sense of humor; entrepreneurial, with an innovative spirit
  • Comfort with change, ambiguity, and risk in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to collaborate well with others as primary means to achieve results 
  • Empathetic, with a commitment to inclusion 
  • Marketing oriented mindset; working knowledge of social media platforms as a marketing tool
