Job Description:


Basic Function and Responsibility:

Under general supervision, paint, varnish, and stain walls, woodwork, guard rails, pavement, fixtures and the like in and around the college on a regular and routine basis. Paint interior and exterior surfaces to include walls, doors, woodwork, ceilings, hand rails, stair casings, guard rails, post, etc. Prepare surfaces for painting that may including cleaning, taping, mudding, sanding, scraping, grinding and or texturing of surfaces. Remove furnishings and cover property prior to painting. Clean and restore area after painting.

Perform additional general maintenance duties such as installing structured cable systems, general repairs, lamp changes, fixture cleaning, snow removal, completing preventative maintenance inspections, assisting skilled maintenance on work order and minor projects.

Ensure safe work practices through correct use of equipment, use of protective personal equipment (PPE), and proper disposal of hazardous materials.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Clean by hand or power wash, grind, sandpaper, steel wool, scrape and/or sandblast surfaces preparatory to painting. Spackle holes, cracks and joints with standard or fast drying joint compound.
  • Paint, stain, varnish or lacquer classrooms, halls, offices, furniture, exteriors, etc. Mix, match, and apply latex and oil based paints, vanish, stains, lacquers, enamels and other finishes.
  • Clean and care for brushes, rollers, spray guns and related equipment.
  • Safely erect and rig scaffolds, extension ladders, scissor lifts, hydraulic booms, etc.
  • Safely work from heights up to 50 feet.
  • Maintain a clean working environment. Move/tarp furniture, file cabinets, desks, etc.
  • Assist in general maintenance including, but not limited to, basic repairs, lamp changes, fixture cleaning, snow removal/salting, and setting up furniture and stages for special events.
  • Perform other job related general maintenance duties as assigned.

  • Requirements:


    Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

    Proficient knowledge of types of paint, varnish, stains, etc and ability to select best product for a given task.
    Ability to understand, follow, and provide written and oral instructions; ability to read and write; ability to perform basic arithmetic.
    Ability to prepare quantity and cost estimates on proposed projects.
    Basic office equipment skills; use software application and read, update, and maintain files and records. Examples include email, word processing, and spreadsheets.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management; ability to work cooperatively with employees, and the general public.

    Physical Working Conditions:
  • The ability to stand, walk and move for extended periods of time (Often - 75% - 100%).
  • The ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel, crawl, push, pull, and reach in all directions (Often - 75% - 100%)
  • The ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. (Often 75% - 100%)
  • The ability to perform moderate to strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time. (Often 75% - 100%)
  • The ability to work at heights and the ability to ascend/descend ladders. (Often - 25% - 50%)
  • Some shifts will require the use of radio communication. Some employees on these shifts, using these devices, will be required to have the ability to hear and exchange information clearly.

  • Job duties may be performed in hot, cold, dusty, dirty environments. Employees may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and outside weather.

    Supervision Received

    Functional supervision is received from the Supervisor of Building Maintenance, Des Plaines. Administrative supervision is received from the Director of Facilities.

    Salary: $42,638 annually

    Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, 7:00am - 3:30pm
