The Illini Union at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking a talented public relations professional to serve as a Media Communications Specialist with Social Media and Public Relations emphasis in our Marketing department. Founded in 1867, the Illinois campus is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions. It is one of the top comprehensive research public universities in the nation. The successful candidate will be working on a campus with academically talented and diverse student population, including 19 percent international students, 12 percent Asian American students, 5 percent African American students, and 6 percent Hispanic/Latino students from a total enrollment of over 42,000 students. As the community center of the University, the Illini Union draws together all members of the University with approximately 16,000 visits of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests on a daily basis.

Position Functions and Major Responsibilities:
The Media Communication Specialist for Social Media and Public Relations is a talented public relations professional who manages all communications functions related to the Illini Union marketing initiatives. S/he manages web content and strategy, social media content and strategy, media relations, copy writing, and editing. S/he also works with internal clients to develop effective communications strategies through e-newsletters, blogs, and email campaigns. S/he is a part of a dynamic, creative team that consistently delivers high-quality marketing materials.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops an active and strategic organization-wide social media presence, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat, YouTube, Pinterest, etc. Develop the Illini Union's social media brand and story for each specific channel. Benchmark social media trends, and develop ideas on how they can be incorporated as part of the Illini Union marketing efforts.
  • Manages all web content for Illini Union website including; calendars, descriptions, documents. Updates departmental pages on the request of managers to ensure information is current and accurate.
  • Evaluates online marketing analytics, including those for Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc. for effectiveness and makes recommendations for improvements.
  • Supervise and manage student social media team, photographers, and videographers, providing guidance in their education and experiential development.
  • Negotiates increased media coverage for the Illini Union through effective media relations and press releases that promote various Illini Union programs and initiatives.
  • Write and edit marketing materials for accuracy, engaging content, design standards, and overall Illini Union representation.
  • Directs the Illini Union's participation in a variety of outreach events and represents the organization (fairs, summer registration, etc.)
  • Manage the Illini Union donation requests and fulfillment.
  • Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit.

Required Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree, preferably in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising or related field is required. Strong understanding of social media and its role in marketing communications, must possess and demonstrate superior attention to detail, must have exceptional organizational and presentation skills, and experience with creating and managing social media ad campaigns is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
At least two years of experience in a similar position, web content management experience, knowledge of AP writing standards, and knowledge of basic marketing concepts.

Appointment Status: This is a 12-month, full-time academic professional position.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
