Associate Provost for Faculty (internal only) (Internal Search)

Position Description:

University of Northern Iowa's Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President seeks internal applicants for the position of Associate Provost for Faculty. Primary functions of this position include advancing the university vision, mission and strategic plan in relation to faculty activities; providing faculty personnel support to Academic Affairs division through collaborative interactions with all constituents; enhancing coordination of administrative processes and procedures for faculty recruitment, retention and recognition; serving as division liaison on faculty personnel matters; assisting with implementation and communication of academic policies and procedures; providing employee relations support; participating in implementation and administration of the faculty handbook, collective bargaining negotiations and contract administration; providing leadership development for department heads; interfacing with Board of Regents and completes Board reports; elevating diversity in faculty hiring, retention, and review; and serving as Academic Affairs representative on academic space issues, policy review committee and the threat assessment team. Characteristic duties and responsibilities of this position:


  1. Provides employee relations support, including oversight and implementation of faculty handbook; maintains liaison with faculty leaders, including United Faculty, Faculty Senate, and Faculty Chair; provides information and advice to faculty and administrators relating to faculty handbook and contract issues; participates in oversight of the faculty handbook and the collective bargaining process; and collaborates regularly with Human Resource Services, University Counsel, and Compliance and Equity Management to address and resolve employee issues.

  2. Enhances coordination of administrative processes and procedures for recruitment, appointment, retention and recognition of a diverse faculty; in collaboration with Human Resource Services and Compliance and Equity Management, provides consultative advice and assistance on recruitment processes and procedures; serves as Provost's signatory authority for specified administrative purposes, including personnel action forms (PAF's); assists with providing positive recognition to faculty members and with faculty development, including oversight of the Director for the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

  3. Assists with oversight of new faculty orientation and faculty development programs; coordinates promotion and tenure process; assists with faculty appeals; serves as liaison with Board Office and Regents institutions; and responds to Board Office inquiries and prepares designated Board docket items related to faculty issues.

  4. Coordinates efforts to revise and communicate faculty personnel policy and

    procedure changes; coordinates efforts to streamline academic administrative processes; serves as member of Policy Review Committee; and provides leadership for Department Head and Associate Dean development.

  5. Provides support and coordination for administrative activities, such as the Threat Assessment Team and the Disability Advocacy and Advisory Committee; advances the university's diversity and inclusion mission; and may represent the Provost as needed at University events, Board of Regents meetings and other functions.

  6. Provides academic facilities management support; analyzes academic space and building repair needs and recommends space allocation/repair priorities; participates in planning of new construction/major renovation projects; and serves on Facilities Planning Advisory Committee and Building Repair Committee.

  7. Chairs and/or facilitates the faculty award process for the following: Regents Award for Faculty Excellence, Class of 1943 Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching; Ross Nielsen Faculty Service Award; Honorary Degree Committee; and Professional Development Assignments.

  8. Assists with other administrative duties and functions as assigned, which may include assisting in providing oversight of the Office of International Programs and/or the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs; and/or advancing faculty involvement in internationalization activities and/or grant writing and implementation.



Education Requirements:

Doctorate or other terminal degree required.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate must meet the following required qualifications:


  • Associate Professor;

  • Doctorate or other terminal degree;

  • At least five years of experience in higher education leadership;

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in program planning, project management, and academic administration;

  • Evidence of successful collaboration and interdisciplinary work;

  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive situations and information with discretion;

  • Experience with college/university personnel, policies and procedures, as well as current trends in higher education;

  • Outstanding communication skills in writing, speaking, and listening; and

  • Commitment to affirmative action and equal opportunity procedures and principles.



Desirable Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications:


  • Full Professor;

  • Experience as Department Head;

  • Experience with either International Programs and/or Research and Sponsored Programs.
