Associate Provost for Academic Affairs

Full/Part Time Status:Full Time Service Schedule:Calendar Year

Position Description:

Advances the university vision, mission and strategic plan in relation to academic affairs activities; provides leadership and facilitation for the curriculum development processes; coordinates academic program review and oversees completion of relevant Board of Regents, State of Iowa (BOR) documentation; provides leadership for strategic initiatives, including working with partners on joint degree programs; assists with providing leadership for meeting goals of the university strategic plan for undergraduate and graduate education, including coordinating engaged learning efforts at UNI; implements and administers policies and regulations affecting students, including oversight of student requests, complaints and grievances; acts as liaison with the BOR; assists Office of Institutional Research on accreditation; assists in coordination of academic affairs involvement in new student orientation; guides university-wide STEM initiatives; represents the Provost's office on multiple external committees; and chairs the honorary degree committee.

1. Provides leadership for meeting goals and objectives of UNI's strategic plan; including advancing student success, diversity and inclusion, campus vitality, and community engagement; leads Engaged Learning initiative; serves on committees to address goals and objectives of strategic plan; and assists enrollment management with recruitment.

2. Provides leadership and facilitation for curriculum development processes; including chairing of University Curriculum Committee (UCC); overseeing annual curriculum cycle; guiding curriculum packets through UCC for Faculty Senate approval; maintaining curriculum website on Provost's site ; meeting with academic colleges and providing updates on curriculum development with key stakeholders, including College Senate Chairs, department heads and secretaries, and faculty curriculum chairs; interacting with Registrar's Office staff during curriculum process for policies/guidelines of university's catalog regulations; and working with BOR office to guide curriculum proposals for program approval.

3. Coordinates academic program review and oversees completion of BOR documentation; including working with Academic Program Review Committee Chair to review/revise annual guidelines; coordinating with external reviewers and leadership team on future steps; spearheading preparation of summary reports for BOR and presentations; and working with departments on 5-year review reports and presentations to BOR.

4. Provides leadership in developing strategic initiatives; including working with area school districts and community college to develop 2+2+2 programs; facilitating conversations with institutions of higher learning in Iowa to develop joint baccalaureate programs in health professions and professional careers; and consulting with University Counsel on MOU agreements.

5. Implements and administers policies and regulations affecting students including oversight of student requests, complaints and grievances; managing administrative Fellows in Provost's Office to provide oversight of student requests, complaints and grievances; leading cross-collaboration efforts with offices across campus for consultation and guidance on student related issues; and meeting with students that want to file grievances.

6. Acts as Academic Affairs liaison to the BOR, assisting the Executive Vice President and Provost in presenting information to full BOR as well as the Academic and Student Affairs subcommittee regarding academic programs; reviewing and revising all curriculum forms, academic program reviews for current and new programs and accreditation reports presented to the BOR.

7. Assists Office of Institutional Research on institutional accreditation; including providing the completed forms for HLC accreditation for new programs and degrees.

8. Assists with Academic Affairs involvement in new student orientation, including working with Student Affairs personnel on Faculty Academic Panel for parents of prospective freshman and transfer students at Orientation.

9. Guides university-wide STEM efforts with supervision of STEM personnel, partnering with UNI STEM Coordinator and UNI STEM Hub manager who oversee and coordinate STEM activities internal to UNI as well as represent the University to external stakeholders; partnering with UNI STEM Coordinator for Iowa's FIRST Robotics Competition Regional and STEM workshops for K-12 children and teachers.

10. Represents UNI Office of the Provost on external committees; assists with review of Tenure and Promotion cases, advising Provost on cases; supervises Administrative Fellow and secretary; and other duties as requested.

11. Serve on multiple internal and external committees as requested by Provost.

12. This position includes an appointment in a disciplinary department.

Education Requirements:

Doctorate or other terminal degree required.

Required Qualifications:

Associate Professor rank plus at least five years of experience in higher education administration required. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in program planning, project management, and academic administration; evidence of successful collaboration, interdisciplinary work, and ability to handle sensitive situations and information with discretion; experience with college/university personnel, policies and procedures, as well as current trends in higher education; outstanding communication skills in writing, speaking, and listening; and demonstrated commitment to affirmative action and equal opportunity procedures and principles also required.

Desirable Qualifications:

Full Professor rank; recent experience as Department Head, Associate Dean, or Dean preferred.
