Assistant Professor of Philosophy
The University of Northern Iowa seeks applications to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy position, beginning August 2017. Teaching load is 3/3, one course per semester in AOS/AOC, or Junior-Senior Seminar, which helps students prepare for employment by integrating their work in the major with experiences outside the classroom, plus two courses in the Liberal Arts Core: Introduction to Philosophy and one in the sequence of three humanities courses. Additional responsibilities include pre-law advising for the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. The successful candidate will share the department's commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, to research that informs their teaching, and to engaged service (mentoring students, serving on committees, and offering programming on campus and in the wider community).
Ph.D. in Philosophy at time of application required plus AOS in one or more of the following: modern philosophy (Kant through Marx) or social/political philosophy, or philosophy of law. AOC in the others also required.
Compelling record of effective teaching, active research program, plus commitment to and understanding of value of studying philosophy in a student-centered, public university with a strong liberal arts tradition required.
UNI's newest strategic plan prioritizes engaged, integrative, and applied learning experiences in and outside the classroom. Demonstrated affinity for these types of learning experiences, including civic engagement, preferred.
