The Opportunity

The School of Nursing at Columbus State University offers baccalaureate and master’s nursing degrees. With a total enrollment of between 800 and 900 students, the school graduates a diverse body of nearly 250 students annually.

The School provides the traditional BSN program for students seeking their RN license and three online degree programs: a RN-BSN option for licensed RNs with an Associate’s degree; a Master of Science in Nursing degree with nurse educator, nurse leadership, and informatics tracks; and a Master of Science in Nursing degree in Family Nurse Practitioner. Both MSN programs are offered in collaboration with Georgia Southwestern State University.

To gain a global perspective of health care organizations, students may participate in a study abroad program in Ireland and a student service opportunity in Ecuador.

More than 85 percent of Columbus State University’s School of Nursing graduates pass the NCLEX, the national nursing licensure exam.

Based on data provided by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Columbus State is the number one RN-to-BSN provider in Georgia among public colleges of nursing.

The Director of the School of Nursing is responsible for advancing the nursing degree programs and continuing its success. The Director is a twelve-month, tenure-track administrative/faculty position in the School of Nursing, within the College of Education and Health Professions.

The Director will foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration while working toward continuous improvement of nursing education. This leader will demonstrate exceptional ability to function as part of a team with University faculty and the community of practice.

Responsibilities include:

  • Administering the academic, fiscal, and human resource management within the School of Nursing
  • Providing overall leadership and direction for curriculum, scheduling, faculty hiring, and faculty and staff evaluations
  • Reviewing of programs
  • Conducting unit strategic planning and setting academic outcomes
  • Leading the development and implementation of new programs
  • Providing recommendations for resource allocations
  • Supporting work relationships internally and externally of the University as well as with alumni

Qualifications

Candidates should have an earned doctorate in Nursing, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university. Along with a record of quality teaching, scholarship, and service, a minimum of three years of teaching is required.

Applicant must have the ability to meet the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges requirements, in particular a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline.

Additionally, the successful candidate must have obtained tenure in a previous position in order to be hired into this position with tenure.

Prior academic leadership experience in an institution of higher education is preferred.

Other requirements are:

Hold a current license or be eligible for licensure as a RN in Georgia

Possess a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively

A demonstrated ability to provide vision, leadership, and advocacy for the university, college, school, programs, faculty, and staff

Possess experience with accreditation of nursing programs

Experience working with and recruiting diverse populations

The College of Education and Health Professions

The College of Education and Health Professions (COEHP) seeks to achieve excellence in the preparation of teachers, counselors, leaders, and health professionals. It offers programs that combine a sound foundation in academics with a multitude of practical experiences.

Dr. Deirdre Greer is dean of the College of Education and Health Professions. The College consists of the Department of Counseling, Foundations, and Leadership; the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Exercise Science; the Department of Teacher Education; and the School of Nursing.

More than 2,600 students are enrolled in the College’s 18 undergraduate and 40 graduate degree programs, many of which lead to initial and advanced educator certification. Eight educational endorsement programs also are available.

Faculty members are engaged in the community through partnerships with school districts, hospitals, clinics, and other organizations.

In its Strategic Plan 2013-2018, the College has identified five strategic initiatives: 1) Strengthen Community Partnerships, 2) Support Professional Commitment and Investment, 3) Increase Collaboration within COEHP and with other Colleges, 4) Growth in Programs, and 5) Increase and Track Student Success.

The COEHP is fully accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs, and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
