Building Trades Specialist

Nature of Work

Reporting to the Carpenter Superintendent, this is an advanced level position for skilled trades professionals. Performs skilled trades work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of building structures and facilities following recognized procedures and techniques. Perform building construction work including carpentry, roofing, flooring, drywall, painting, masonry, framing, and a range of building types. Manage procedures and/or status of work orders, providing information, making decisions, comply with building and safety regulations; provide assistance to the Superintendent and Foreman. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours as an essential staff member for university emergency response. Employees may be required to perform other job-related duties as requested by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

Education and Training: Minimum of High school diploma or GED is required, plus 6 (six) years or more of experience in the residential and commercial building construction trades field, Or combination of 2 (two) years Vocational Trades training and 4 (four) years of field experience in the building construction trades. Available for on-call status, work nights or weekends to service emergency needs of or campus. A pre-employment drug screen required. A valid driver’s license required. Knowledge of the International Building Code, ADA code, NFPA code. Perform technical tasks, adapt to meet changing job conditions, preparing and maintaining accurate records; proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings; proficient in understanding and complying with safety regulations and handling hazardous materials (i.e. OSHA and EPA). Able to follow instructions, perform routine tasks individually or team setting; well organized; able to adjust work hours as conditions may dictate; able to follow the organization’s established protocol for customer service. Communicate effectively, maintain a productive and collaborative professional work relationships; respond to questions within policy and procedure guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Training: Diploma or Professional Certificate in Building Construction Management or related field. Experience: Eight (8) years experience in a related construction or maintenance trade. Skills: Proficient in basic computer skills. Knowledge: Commercial building codes, interpret technical information, charts, gauges, dials, blueprints, schematics, specifications, and operating manuals. Provide technical assistance to others by troubleshooting simple facilities maintenance issues and determining their cause.

Salary

$17.14/hrly (minimum) - $22.38/hrly (midpoint)

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. or more. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolds. Must be able to stand, walk, bend/stoop, reach above shoulder level and climb stairs. Ability to perform strenuous manual tasks. Ability to access confined spaces and work in open areas such as roof tops, etc.
