Assistant Professor in Special Education

Job Information/Department:

TheSchool of Teacher Education (STE), College of Education, Florida State University, invites applications foranassistant professortenure-earningposition to start in Fall 2013. Theposition willinvolve teaching, research, and servicein Special Education, a longstanding major program within STE.  Special Education has recently restructured their areas of specialization to lead the State of Florida in the preparation of special education candidates.  One of these specializations is Severe Cognitive Disabilities, which combines autism spectrum disorders and severe/profound disabilities. Thus, we seek a colleague who specializes in autism spectrum disorder with whom to collaborate in our academic community.  For more information about the School of Teacher Education, visit:  www.coe.fsu.edu/STE



Responsibilities forthe position include(1)maintainingastrong record ofscholarship related to autism spectrum disorderincludingleadership in securingexternal funds to support the individual's scholarship and graduate training,(2)providinginstruction, advising, and leadership in theSchool of TeacherEducation at theundergraduate andgraduatelevel, and(3)participating in serviceorcivicengagement activities at thecenter, department, college, university, and professional organization levels.



Candidates forthis position shoulddemonstrate astrongcommitment to undergraduate andgraduate teaching, strong evidenceof scholarlyproductivity, and potential for afunded independent research program.  Desirable candidates should havean earned doctoratein education or other appropriate field, teachingexperienceat the elementaryor secondarylevel, and expertise in children and youth with autism spectrum disorder.  Expertise and experience with children and youth with severe levels of autism and alternative, augmentative communication (AAC) communication systems preferred.



This is a nine-month, tenure earning position at the assistant professor rank, with possible summer employment.  The anticipated start date for this position is August, 2013 (Fall 2013 Semester.)  Salary is negotiable.
