Senior Accountant

PAY GRADE: 30E

CONTEXT OF JOB:

Within University Finance, the Controller's Office performs official accounting duties for the University of Delaware. The department provides and maintains the official accounting records and related systems of internal control in accordance with accounting principles and standards set by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), University policy and procedures, the requirements of federal and state governmental agencies, and external funding sources. The department is also responsible for maintaining the accurate and timely recording of financial transactions and oversees both internal and external financial reporting. Senior Accountants in the Controller's Office work with broad discretion as to work details on assignments of a varied, diverse and difficult nature. Effective written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people while handling multiple tasks with deadlines is essential.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

The major responsibilities can include, but are not limited to the items listed below. Under general direction, Senior Accountants in the Controller's Office:
  • Perform accounting duties requiring professional experience, knowledge and competency in accounting principles and practices.
  • Assist in preparing the University's consolidated financial statements, footnotes and supplemental schedules by analyzing data and preparing various audit work papers.
  • Assist in preparing the NCAA Schedule of Revenues and Expenses and supporting workpapers.
  • Assist in preparing the F&A rate proposal and annual fringe benefit rate proposal.
  • Assist with reviewing requests for new service centers and reviewing budgets and rate schedules for existing service centers.
  • Interact with external auditors in varying degrees and provide sufficient information and documentation to support their test work in assigned areas.
  • Work with IT, Budget Office and other University stakeholders to develop and enhance financial reporting.
  • Reconcile select asset and liability purpose codes to subsidiary ledgers while also understanding and documenting the underlying business processes and reasons for fluctuations.
  • Utilize and/or maintain various subsystems including the Asset Management and Space Allocation modules in PeopleSoft. Survey space and equipment to maintain accurate records.
  • Recommend business process improvements.
  • Prepare specialized or general reports and analyses on a routine or ad-hoc basis.
  • Other related duties/special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree with at least three to five years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in accounting preferred.
  • Knowledge of financial accounting principles, practices and procedures.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to gather, analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports using spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Journal entry, general ledger and financial statement experience.
  • Knowledge of computerized general ledger systems, PeopleSoft Financials is preferred.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with deadlines and pressure.
  • Ability to adjust work schedule to meet deadlines.
