CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under general direction of a Scientist, the Research Associate conducts geologic research related to the geology offshore Delaware, specifically the identification and quantification of sand resources.

This position will be at the Delaware Geological Survey at the University of Delaware. Funding for this position is for a period of up to 36 months through the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) from Hurricane Sandy Relief funds allocated by Congress for Beach Restoration projects. Employment may be extended, pending additional funding.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Implements a research plan under the direction of Principal Investigator for geologic mapping offshore Delaware, sand resource identification, and sand resource quantification of offshore sand resources
• Compiles data related to the geology of offshore Delaware including, but not limited to, seismic data, core data, seafloor texture data, and seafloor morphology
• Analyzes and interprets complex data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other accepted methodologies including seismic processing (SonarWiz, SeiSee) in line with direction from the Principal Investigator to calculate resource estimates and develop geologic maps.
• Manages and populates databases, and creates metadata.
• In collaboration with the direction of Principal Investigator, interacts with Federal, State, and private partners in geologic interpretations, training, data sharing, and data transfer.
• Assists Principal Investigator in preparing public presentations on project progress and findings, and prepares reports.
• Organizes and conducts research after initial task orientation by Principal Investigator with minimal supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in geology or other related field and three years' related experience in marine geology, geologic mapping, seismic stratigraphy, or resource analysis, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Familiarity with stratigraphy, geologic sample description, construction of geologic maps, and experience in use of GIS and database management.
• Experience in work aboard a research vessel including geophysical data collection and coring a plus.
• Familiarity with FGDC and ISO metadata standards, and experience with spatial and relational databases a plus.
• Ability to contribute toward writing, compiling, and displaying data for technical reports and communicate effectively with DGS staff, research collaborators, and the general public.
