CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction and supervision of the faculty supervisor, the Research Associate I performs research to study the function of red cells in vitro or in vivo. May work individually or as a member of a team, including application of generally accepted procedures, collection and preliminary analysis of data, and recognition of and response to procedural problems. Conduct research projects requiring the application of protocols and implements systems to ensure actions/decisions do not unduly obligate or place the University in an adverse position. Appropriately balances expectations and needs of different groups in the lab.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Independently conducts experimental and organizational procedures and activities to gain a better understanding of iron biology. Provides technical assistance with various research projects being conducted by other members of the lab.
• Evaluates, selects, and applies standard biochemical techniques to accomplish research objectives focused on the study of platelet signal transduction mechanisms. Analyzes and interprets complex data. Experiments may include (but are not limited to) radioactive heme labeling, cell culture, analysis of proteins via immunoprecipitation or immunoblotting techniques, flow cytometry, PCR analysis, and other techniques as warranted. Experiments involve the use of animal models, particularly mouse and zebrafish models, and involve mouse/zebrafish husbandry, genotyping and careful record-keeping.
• Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of scientific alternatives requiring the exercise of judgment.
• Identifies the critical issues to be communicated in complex situations and interprets relevant information when making decisions. Receives and carries out instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions.
• Assists supervisor in the analyses and interpretation of the experiment results. Independently collects, compiles, analyzes, and interprets data; prepares statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs.
• Delivers individual instruction and training covering a range of technical areas in a specified field.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety.
• Maintains sophisticated laboratory tests/apparatus; designs, performs, and oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity and protocol compliance. Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook with results of experiments.
• Organize zebrafish feedings, breedings and other chores, and assist with IACUC and lab safety documentation.
• Utilizes information taken from primary journal articles to carry out relevant experiments and or interpretation of results.
• Presents experimental results to the faculty supervisor or to the lab group for discussion and future planning.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Duties may involve ordering laboratory supplies, maintenance of animal colonies, and preparation of regulatory documents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field with 1 year of lab experience.
• Experience with animal maintenance and handling preferred
• Knowledge of standard biochemical research methodology, principles and procedures;
• Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment;
• Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies;
• Requires skill in use of personal computers and related software applications;
• Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures; ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific and/or engineering research projects; as well as ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.

ENVIRONMENTAL/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

• Work environment may include working in a cold room for short periods of time.
• Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Without assistance, must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
• Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials.
• The ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials.
• Must be able to work various and sometimes long hours due to the timing on experiments, including possibly weekends and evenings.
