CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Infant Caregiver Laboratory is housed in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. The Infant Caregiver Lab is funded by NIMH R01 grants to Dr. Mary Dozier, Principal Investigator. The Infant Caregiver Lab is a research lab designed to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention to help children in foster care develop secure attachments to their caregivers. The intervention is also being used with children never separated from their parents who have had adverse early experiences. The project involves pre- and post-intervention research measures obtained from the participating children, and follows the children's development over several years. Additionally, the project assesses the effectiveness of the intervention and disseminates the interventions to national and international sites.

The Research Associate I supports the research efforts of the Principal Investigator in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Delaware. The position will be funded via the external grant funding of the Principal Investigator. The position is temporary and may be renewed on a 12-month basis, dependent upon available funding and performance.

Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Associate I will oversee the day-to-day activities of the research lab. These responsibilities include ensuring that all research protocols are adhered to, managing the procurement and allocation of laboratory resources, recruiting and scheduling participants, and recording, analyzing, and interpreting research data. The Research Associate I is responsible for the supervision of the undergraduate researchers involved in this project as well.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Uses scientific training and independent judgment to plan, schedule, and carry out day-to-day activities, procedures, and research studies, ensuring efficient workflow, and adequate care and treatment of research participants. Contributes to the development and implementation of protocols, procedures, and techniques relating to all aspects of the research.
  • Uses advanced computer-based statistical and graphic programs and techniques to analyze and interpret data. Provides initial analyses of results to the Principal Investigator. Makes substantive suggestions for improvements in techniques and interpretation, as appropriate. Keeps all lab data properly recorded, organized and stored for easy retrieval by researcher and research/accounting auditors, and to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance.
  • Establishes and adheres to appropriate data collection systems and procedures, according to pre-established research protocol; coordinates and monitors the collection, processing, and recording of data, as required by established study protocol. Manages compliance with human subject protocols.
  • Coordinates participant visits. Explains all procedures to participants in accordance with University and federal protocol for working with human research participants and obtains their written consent to participate. Maintains strong working relationships with participating families who may be high-risk. Oversees the fiscal management of the grant by managing all payments to study participants and monitoring supply inventories.
  • Provides specialized training and supervises undergraduate research assistants on all areas of the research. Coordinate schedules between undergraduate student coders and higher-level supervisors, and be available for consultation for undergraduate coders. Delegates work according to the individuals' skills, knowledge, and abilities. Clearly explains work assignments. Establishes and communicates fully successful performance criteria. Provides timely and specific feedback.
  • Serves as collaborator in the preparation of co-authored manuscripts and conference presentations.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and one year related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of experimental procedures and data collection, analysis, editing, validation, manipulation, and reduction.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies, and procedures pertaining to human subjects and clinical research preferred.
  • Ability to analyze research methodology, protocol, and procedures and make recommendations for improvements and modifications.
  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
  • Ability to adapt standard procedures, facilities and/or equipment to meet specific operational needs.
  • Ability to make decisions in the field and/or at professional conferences without direct supervisor oversight, when appropriate.
  • Ability to collaborate with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
  • Effective communication, human relations, and listening skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele.
  • Experience conducting home- and lab-based research visits strongly preferred.
  • Ability to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments preferred.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management preferred.
  • Interviewing and evaluation skills preferred.
  • Ability to understand and speak Spanish preferred.
  • Experience with electroencephalogram (EEG) data collection preferred.
  • Skill in the use of computer applications and data analysis, for example, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and statistical and graphics software preferred.
