CONTEXT OF THE JOB

The Center for Drug & Health Studies is housed in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, where the director manages and directs four Principal Investigators. The principal mission of the Center for Drug & Health Studies is the utilization, production, and dissemination of scientific knowledge in various aspects of substance abuse, health behaviors, and health service to inform program development as well as policy implementation. (See www.cdhs.udel.edu ) The Center directs several projects for the State of Delaware using a variety of research techniques, including surveys of individuals, statistical analysis of administrative data, observation, and personal interviews. The Research Associate II supports the research efforts of Principal Investigators in the Center at the University of Delaware.

Under the general direction of a Principal Investigator(s), the Research Associate II will primarily work on data analysis and oversee the day-to-day data analysis related activities, such as writing syntax, analyzing data, conforming to research protocols, etc, of at least two research projects. This position will work closely with other key staff on similar tasks. Responsibilities include ensuring that all research protocols are adhered to, collecting research data, and recording, analyzing, and interpreting research data. This position seeks a detailed oriented person who is comfortable checking and rechecking work and analyses for potential errors. The Research Associate II is also responsible for the supervision of any undergraduate student researchers involved in this project, and will work in collaboration with graduate student researchers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Demonstrates and applies thorough understanding of scientific methods, research protocols, assessment instruments, and data interpretation.
  • Uses statistical software packages to analyze data depending on project requirements. Strong knowledge of SPSS using syntax. Knowledge of other statistical software programs in addition to SPSS is ideal, such as SAS or Stata.
  • Has advanced skills in at least two specialized research processes such as computer database construction and maintenance, statistical analysis of social science data; survey instrument construction.
  • Implements and/or oversees data collection to ensure data integrity, accuracy control, and protocol compliance.
  • Plans and programs data entry systems to record data collected in surveys, records searches and other types of data collections.
  • Under PI and senior staff supervision, may serve as collaborator in the preparation of co-authored manuscripts and conference presentations; may present research results.
  • May train, schedule, and supervise students and Research Associates I for projects or long-term assignments.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree and three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of SPSS (using syntax).
  • Working knowledge of Excel Pivot Tables.
  • Effective written communication skills (technical research and report documents, examples of written products required).
  • Knowledge and understanding of research procedures, data collection, and analysis.
  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once and prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Effective communication, human relations, and listening skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Willingness to work with diverse populations.
  • Willingness to travel to research sites within the State of Delaware.
