Context of the Job

The Center for Disabilities Studies (CDS) is the largest research and public service center in the College of Education and Human Development. It promotes the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of society. The Center accomplishes this through education, service, information dissemination, and research. The Director of the Career & Life Studies Certificate (CLSC) program will be a part of the Transition, Education & Employment Model (TEEM) Unit within the Center. Under the limited direction of the Associate Director, the incumbent leads the Career & Life Studies Certificate (CLSC) program, an inclusive higher education program for students with intellectual disabilities. This nationally-known model-demonstration program is driven by person-centered values and results in a certificate from the UD Office of Professional and Continuing Studies. The program includes coursework, internships, residential and campus life activities, all of which are fostered through engagement and support by UD faculty, staff and students in creating a climate of inclusion across the university. The incumbent will lead all aspects of the program by establishing, communicating, and pursuing a vision and long-term goals and developing policies and processes. The incumbent oversees person-centered planning, curriculum development, campus/community relationships, the program budget, and recruitment, and ensures the delivery of high quality supports for all students and families. The incumbent works closely with campus partners, families, state agencies and adult service providers and promotes the benefits of college for students with ID throughout the community. With assistance from the Associate Director and UD faculty, the incumbent will establish a research agenda for the program to ensure that it remains cutting-edge and further informs the field. The incumbent also oversees affiliated summer programs for high school students. The incumbent supervises full time professional employees, professional contract employees, and oversees the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students.

Major Responsibilities
  • Administer the day-to-day operations of a $400,000 +/year inclusive higher education program and ensure compliance with federal practice standards and guidelines.
  • Oversee the hiring and supervision of all CLSC staff, conduct regular meetings with the CLSC team and facilitate professional development opportunities.
  • Oversee the implementation of all facets of CLSC including person-centered planning, curriculum, internships, advisement, residential and campus life experiences.
  • Oversee marketing and recruitment for the program and maintain constructive relationships with key campus and community partners.
  • Collaborate closely with agency staff and adult service providers on students' transition into post-CLSC activities.
  • Maintain the financial and reimbursement systems and processes for creating the program budget and monitoring related revenue and expenditures, as well as maintain strong relationships with funding agencies.
  • Oversee the maintenance of program-related databases.
  • Supervise preparation of reports and maintenance of records to meet all requirements of the institution and funding sources.
  • Identify and prepare related grant proposals.
  • Coordinate the dissemination of information locally and nationally concerning project activities.
  • Develop and disseminate project information at state and national conferences.
  • Coordinate long range program planning and development.
  • Oversee the development and evaluation of program policies and procedures.
  • Supervise affiliated summer transition programs for high school students.
  • Act as liaison to state, local, university, nonprofit and private agencies and organizations to build relationships that expand our influence, visibility and participation in the community.
  • Advocate for systems change through participation on disability related councils, committees, and planning meetings.
  • Serve on state and national committees as appropriate.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Essential

Master's degree, doctorate preferred, in education, human services or related field and five years of experience supporting people with disabilities. Knowledge of postsecondary transition, emerging employment and/or higher education practices and person-centered processes. Experience in supervising staff. Effective interpersonal and collaborative skills, particularly with community partners, and in communication with students and families. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Experience in maintaining program budgets. Ability to make administrative, procedural, and policy decisions and judgments are essential.

Preferred

Experience in grant writing, grant management and/or the conduct of research.

Special Requirements:

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed. Ability to travel to statewide school districts and the surrounding region periodically and have access to reliable means of transportation.
