Open-Rank Position in Mathematics Education

Position. The University of Delaware invites applications for an Open-Rank tenure-track faculty position in Mathematics Education. We seek an exemplary scholar and, for senior applicants, a leader in mathematics education. This newly created position is funded to enhance the contributions of a thriving program which is regarded highly within and outside of the University. The mathematics education faculty members at UD pride themselves on sustaining a culture of exciting, collaborative, and supportive scholarship. The start date of this position, housed in the School of Education at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, is September 1, 2019.

Qualifications and Responsibilities. A doctorate in Mathematics Education or a related field is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a high-quality research program, a history of excellent teaching, a strong mathematics background, and three or more years of experience in an academic faculty position. Commensurate with experience, candidates are also expected to be pursuing a program of research that is making a significant contribution to the field and have a strong record of external funding. Responsibilities include sustaining a significant research program in mathematics education, supervising doctoral research, and teaching effectively in the mathematics education program. Teaching responsibilities include graduate courses in mathematics education and undergraduate mathematics content and methods courses for pre-service elementary and middle school teachers. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in promoting diversity and equal opportunities through research, teaching, or public engagement.

Mathematics Education at UD. The mathematics education group at the University of Delaware includes five faculty members in the School of Education and four in the Department of Mathematical Sciences who teach in nationally-recognized undergraduate and doctoral programs in mathematics education. Our PhD program in mathematics education is housed in the School of Education, but it is a collaborative venture between mathematics education faculties in both departments. Our undergraduate program in elementary mathematics teacher education also provides pre-service teachers with an option to earn certification to teach middle school mathematics.

The mathematics education faculty at UD have a history of engaging in significant research with consistent support from external funding agencies. Over the past two decades, mathematics educators' external funding at UD has totaled over $19 million. Faculty members in the School of Education have collaborated to develop a research-based, award-winning mathematics teacher preparation program, one of the strongest in the nation. Representatives of the faculty form the editorial team for the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, the premier journal in mathematics education research. Recently, two faculty members received Early Career Grants from the National Science Foundation, and one member served as editor of the Compendium for Research in Mathematics Education,the most comprehensive compilation of research in our field.

Special opportunities for conducting research are provided through the undergraduate teacher education program, through the College's Professional Development Center for Educators, through the Delaware Mathematics Coalition, a state professional development organization, and through connections with Delaware school districts. In the School of Education, there are also Learning Sciences faculty members whose research addresses children's mathematical thinking and learning.

The School of Education within the College of Education and Human Development has 50 full-time faculty, and houses nearly 600 undergraduate majors and minors and 360 graduate students. The School offers an undergraduate major in elementary teacher education and undergraduate minors in educational studies, educational technology, and urban education. The School of Education supports several robust graduate programs at both the master's and doctoral level including a PhD program in education, an EdD in educational leadership, and an EdS in school psychology. Faculty in the School of Education are highly research active in areas spanning language and literacy, mathematics education, the science of learning, sociocultural approaches, and educational policy. Faculty research is externally supported from numerous foundations and from federal agencies such as the Institute for Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. In the last several years, faculty have garnered external funding in excess of $21 million and the college ranks among the top universities nationally in obtaining federal support for education research. Faculty in the School of Education are recognized for their contributions to national conversations about critical educational issues, lead organizations working to address those issues, and provide a range of supports to the agencies at the front lines of improving educational opportunities and outcomes. The faculty are a methodologically diverse and collegial group of nationally and internationally known scholars.
