Postdoctoral Researcher, Mechanical Engineering

Applicants are invited to consider a postdoctoral researcher position at the University of Delaware in the field of robotic-assisted pediatric (motor) rehabilitation. The researcher will work on child-robot interaction in the context of an NIH-funded interdisciplinary project that involves the collaboration of experts from the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Physical Therapy, and Cognitive Science at the University of Delaware, and the department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The goal of this project is to examine the effectiveness of a new rehabilitation environment on the motor behavior of young children with mobility impairments. The environment is enriched with playground equipment (e.g. foam-padded inclined surfaces such as a staircase and a ramp), socially assistive robots, and an open-area body-weight support system. Children interact with the robots while exploring the different features of the environment, with and without the support of the system. The children's and the robots' mobility actions are recorded through cameras and motion sensors to monitor the interaction and the changes in children's behavior and mobility. This project also involves aspects of human-machine interaction, robot control, and machine vision.

The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for: recruitment of subjects, data collections, data analysis, preparation and submission of IRB protocols, training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students, development of new experimental/research methods to determine and advance rehabilitation outcomes, writing and submission of conference and journal publications. The candidate will also serve as the liaison between the different research sites and is expected to facilitate the full-group online meetings and organize the agendas, and report progress to the PI.

We are looking for a highly-motivated candidate with particular interest in child-robot interaction and a background on motor development, behavior, and/or learning. A doctoral degree in rehabilitation/health science, kinesiology, developmental psychology or a related field is required. The candidate should have experience working with infants and children with and without motor disabilities and expertise on behavioral and motion testing and analysis using a variety of software/hardware (e.g. Datavyu, Vicon). A license in pediatric physical therapy and experience with standardized developmental assessments is a plus.

Salary is competitive and is set by UD rules depending on level of training. International candidates are welcome to apply. The application must include: (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) the names and addresses of three or more references, (4) a two-page statement of research interests, and (5) electronic copies of no more than three representative publications.

Applications should be sent as a single pdf document to Dr. Herbert Tanner (btanner@udel.edu).
