NMR Spectroscopist

PAY GRADE: 31E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

NMR spectroscopy is one of the most important analytical tools for gaining information about the structure and dynamics of molecules and materials. In recognition of the central role of NMR spectroscopy and its use by a wide variety of chemical researchers, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Delaware maintains a departmental NMR Facility operating shared instrumentation. The rapidly growing NMR facility is located in a newly built 4,650 ft2 NMR Magnet Hall. The facility currently consists of 6 spectrometers operating at frequencies from 400 to 850 MHz. These instruments serve more than 30 research groups at the University of Delaware and beyond, and they are used for modern NMR experiments on a wide variety of systems, including biomacromolecules, inorganic materials, polymers, and small molecules, both in solution and in the solid state.

Under the limited direction of the NMR Facility Director, the NMR Spectroscopist is responsible for operating and maintaining the instrumentation, for acquiring NMR data for research groups across the campus, for implementing new NMR experiments, for training and supervising student and postdoctoral users, and for assisting in the preparation of proposals for new equipment.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operates and maintains the shared solid-state and solution NMR instrumentation in the NMR facility.
  • Trains and supervises student and post doctoral users.
  • Implements newly developed NMR experiments on the shared NMR instruments.
  • Prepares protocols for new equipment.
  • Tracks instrument usage and allocates instrument time.
  • Repairs instruments and communicates with NMR manufacturers as needed.
  • Collaborates with faculty and NMR Facility Director in preparing proposals for new equipment, as needed.
  • Maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and systems by attending one national or international NMR meeting per year.
  • Coordinates formal and informal reviews of all lab research equipment and safety procedure of the NMR lab.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties assigned by the department Chair or relevant departmental committees.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or other related field with four years' experience in solid-state and solution NMR spectroscopy and its applications to biological systems and small molecules.
  • Ability to develop and implement new NMR experiments, in particular multidimensional experiments for structural analysis of biological systems.
  • Knowledge of electronics and software for data collection and processing in modern solid-state and solution NMR spectrometers.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills, flexibility and the ability to positively interact with a diverse group of NMR users.
  • Ability to communicate with NMR spectrometer manufacturers
  • Desire and motivation to learn new techniques.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to adapt and modify research concepts and approaches to specific NMR experiments.
  • Knowledge of current technological trends in solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy.
  • Ability to develop and follow experimental research protocols to be adapted in multi-user environment.
