Manager, Computing Operations - Athletics

Position Information

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Athletic Director - Finance, Analytics and Operations, the incumbent will plan, build and implement a comprehensive Information Technology program that provides strategic, proactive and responsive operational support to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Services (DIARS) at the University of Delaware.

The incumbent is primarily responsible for developing and providing high quality IT support focused day-to-day and game-day computing services, information technology and operations support for the DIARS community. S/He will develop and maintain a collaborative partnership with Information Technologies (IT), the central computing organization on campus, in order to stay abreast of enterprise-wide technology initiatives, and to ensure that efforts are consistently implemented in accordance with campus IT standards and aligned with both short-term and long-term DIARS goals and plans. S/He will develop and maintain key Information Technology vendor relationships in compliance with UD IT standards and ensure DIARS business requirements as well as customer service level expectations (SLEs) are established and consistently met and/or exceeded.

The incumbent will collaborate with the DIARS Business Systems Analyst to build, plan and run a high-performing information technology environment and computing operations team that will maximize the use of technology to create efficient, effective, and transparent ways to work within and across the department and university community.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:


Management of Technical Operations
  • Create and manage a core group of student support staff that will serve as the frontline desktop support team.
  • Provide desktop support for issues beyond the capacity of student staff. Document, monitor and resolve all technical support requests and oversee the design and implementation of a central knowledge base resource for help desk staff to reference.
  • Take IT projects from original concept through completion using appropriate tools and effectively communicate progress to all stakeholders with responsibility for quality control and on-time delivery within scope and budget.
  • Establish written policies and procedures as well as best practices for all aspects of DIARS information technology and operations.
  • Design, manage and implement technical operations to minimize downtime for DIARS staff.
  • Design, manage and implement essential security practices for DIARS systems.
  • Audit, document and manage all software license agreements and ensure DIARS compliance with all software, hardware and SAAS platform use on a routine basis.
  • Develop and administer technology asset management protocols, including:

    • Mobile phone and peripheral device acquisition and support for DIARS staff
    • Inventory tracking (e.g., equipment refresh lifecycles, mobile contracts, office equipment service contracts, etc.)
    • Information technology asset budgeting, planning and recommendations
  • Continually evaluate current technologies and research new technologies, ensuring IT assets are used effectively and strategically to meet goals
  • In consultation with the Senior Associate Athletic Director - Finance, Analytics and Operations, develop a technology operations budget process including inventory management, program performance reports and strategic recommendations.


System Administration
  • Monitor health, capacity and availability of DIARS server equipment and develop systems platform and operational processes to consistently evaluate system performance and improvement recommendations.
  • Respond to incidents and communicate service outages in DIARS systems and applications.
  • Manage security access to servers via firewall configuration, user access and accounts management, and best-in-class security systems hardening in accordance with Central-IT policy, guidelines and industry best practices
  • Monitor systems, applications, and user accounts to proactively identify emergency situations and alerts to prompt immediate action.
  • Manage systems upgrades, and provide recommendations/plans for future upgrades.
  • Maintain network facilities in servers and individual machines, such as drivers and settings of personal computers as well as desktop and network printers.
  • Administer security updates and patches on servers, desktop computers, printers, phones, and all other devices in a timely and consistent manner.

Information Security
  • Engage with Central-IT in delivery of security initiatives
  • Perform risk assessments on DIARS systems and business processes communicating risk to management so as to facilitate informed decision making.
  • Work with Central-IT to train staff on information security procedures ensuring that information security is a responsibility for all members of DIARS.
  • Protect systems by defining access privileges, control structures, and resources, and working with access control groups to ensure appropriate access rules are followed.
  • Identify security violations and inefficiencies by conducting periodic audits of systems and processes.
  • Acquire, share and present knowledge of important technology trends relevant to DIARS community needs, and provide strategic recommendations for adaptation of technologies and/or policies in partnership with the Business Systems Analyst.
  • Create, test and implement disaster recovery plans for DIARS.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, computer science, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5 years progressively responsible technical, operational and IT leadership experience in a large/complex organization
  • Demonstrated experience building, managing and/or directing IT operations, including data management, networks, desktop client/server, licensing servers, web applications, user/accounts management, user/group directory services, information security, including information assurance, service availability, on-call operations
  • Proficient knowledge of industry best practices for data security, desktop client/server, and IT asset (hardware, software, vendor licensing) management
  • Knowledge of MS Windows, MacOS, and Linux operating systems
  • Experience managing PCs and Windows servers in an Active Directory environment including managing security configurations, shared folders, printers, user permissions, group policy management, system backup and recovery
  • Highly proficient programming skills
  • Knowledge of scripting languages
  • Experience with querying, statistical software, reporting tools, database administration, JAVA, Javascript, PHP
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills with proven ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and implement strategic plans and programs that support the DIARS mission and fulfill customer expectations by developing solutions that provide value
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with multiple types of stakeholders in a positive and productive manner while maintaining integrity and adhering to the compliance rules of the NCAA and the University of Delaware Athletic Department
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects and prioritize workload with a strong sense of ownership and urgency to meet deadlines in a dynamic, challenging and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to provide creative problem-solving, technical leadership and team building in a dynamic environment with complex business requirements
  • Ability to work effectively as a collaborative leader in a positive, team-oriented environment
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and evenings
  • At least 1 year of experience in help desk/desktop support role preferred
  • At least 1 year of experience with MS Windows Server administration preferred
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, Ticketmaster, JumpForward, and CRMs (ex. Salesforce) preferred

Special Requirements
  • The ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, computing related equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional travel for business meetings across the university and IT vendor conferences may be required
