Mail Handler

PAY GRADE: 25N

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine and non-routine duties related to delivery, sorting and processing of U.S. Mail and intramural mail within the University. Position requires some independent judgment in the application of established procedures related to Campus Mail.

MAJOR RESPOSIBLITIES:
  • Pickup and sort incoming U.S. mail, packages, and interdepartmental mail.
  • Bundle mail for delivery to departments and resident halls.
  • Deliver departmental and residential mail daily.
  • Scan packages into computer program at the Student Center Package Center. Verify identify of receiver before distributing packages.
  • Safely operate cargo vans and box trucks during mail delivery runs.
  • Handle outgoing U.S. mail through electronic postal meter system and expense to departments via mail management software.
  • Complete postal documentation identifying certified, insured and registered mail.
  • Process bulk mail paperwork and deliver to U.S. Post Office.
  • Utilize software to verify correct address and forward to appropriate department.
  • Process UPS shipments and international mail utilizing various software programs, transfer data to PC.
  • Obtain departmental signatures upon delivery of packages for record keeping.
  • Answer departmental phone and assist with inquiries.
  • Prepare and label periodical mailings for delivery to U.S. Post Office.
  • Operate fork lift for loading and unloading mail.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and one year of related work experience.
  • Mail processing experience preferred.
  • Basic computer skills including the ability to input, save and retrieve data
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to read.


ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Use of personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous material may be occasionally required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to use personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, with or without assistance, up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience operating a fork lift preferred.
  • Experience operating cargo vans and box trucks preferred.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
