Financial Analyst I, College of Arts & Sciences

PAY GRADE: 30E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under general direction of the Sr. Financial Data Analyst, the Financial Analyst I performs and/or oversees a variety of associated and highly complex financial preparation, monitoring, planning activities for the College of Arts & Sciences. Responsibilities require advanced or specialized knowledge and skills in order to assist in administering over 300 budgets for which the college has management oversight and fiscal responsibility, including grants and contract administration, budget development and maintenance, and monitoring and administering department finances. The incumbent will assist in analysis and interpretation of complex data related to financials, procurement, and college wide policies and procedures. Resolve administrative and procedural problems. The principal emphasis for this position is on performing high-level financial analysis requiring the exercise of regular independent judgment and discretion. This position has high expectations for positive and collaborative teamwork, flexibility, and critical-thinking skills.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Monitor assigned budgets within the College of Arts & Sciences to include developing an in-depth understanding of assigned unit operations and policy to assist with budget preparations, and short-term and long-term financial planning,
  • Assists with the submission of yearly, quarterly, and monthly budget forecasts, preparing projections and performing variance analysis.
  • Prepare Expenditure and cost analysis, and account reconciliations for assigned departments.
  • Assists with interpretation, of College and University policies and procedures related to Financials, and procurement
  • Develops, analyzes, and presents timely and accurate financial data and information to be used in fiscal planning, decision making, and resource allocation.
  • Assists in assembling data and information for the preparation of internal and external financial presentations.
  • Evaluates alternatives; prepares and distributes reports on research results for review.
  • Assists with statistical/ financial studies and cost/ income forecasts for the College that are used in addressing issues that have budgetary impact.
  • Utilizes statistical methods and computerized models to organize and analyze issues and information.
  • Maintains confidentiality and professional collaborative relationships with departments and units within the College of Arts and Sciences and throughout the University.
  • Recommends creative improvements to current processes and work products.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, management, accounting or related field with four years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of budgeting, financial reporting and analysis.
  • Ability to execute and integrate financial analyses and prepare summaries and projections.
  • Proficient computer skills and experience using spreadsheet, charting, and other software tools, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook. Experience developing queries and writing reports to analyze data preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with software to quantify and illustrate complex financial reports, comparisons, impacts and projections.
  • Ability to translate data from reports and analytical studies into concise written reports as necessary.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to draft professional reports and correspondence that is clear and concise.
  • Skill in preparing budgets and forecasting.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills that facilitate the interpretation of budgetary, financial information.
  • Ability to work independently and to prioritize work under the pressure of competing assignments.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion, especially with regards to sensitive or confidential personnel or organizational matters.
