Farm Assistant II

PAY GRADE: 26N

DEADLINE: Open until Filled

CONTEXT OF JOB:

Under general supervision and following standard operating procedures, assists researchers and supervisors, collects data related to animal research and performs mechanical duties. The primary emphasis is preparation of facilities for research and teaching projects. Maintains buildings and equipment in good working conditions and performs various duties related to the care and management of poultry. Independent judgment is required to resolve routine problems.

MAJOR RESPONSIBLITES:
  • Supervise and assist preparation of poultry facilities for research, teaching and extension. These activities include: cleaning, disinfecting, repairs and set-up. Assist project leaders in caring for experimental animals and collecting data.
  • Supervise and assist in performing routine tasks necessary for the proper care of animals on the Poultry Farm, Allen Laboratory, including: providing water, feed, bedding heat, lighting and ventilation. Work on weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.
  • Supervise and assist in the routine tasks of egg collection, labeling, incubation, and hatching. Performs poultry care duties including beak trimming, vaccination, wing banding and euthanasia.
  • Supervise and assist in the pick up and disposal of soiled bedding, accumulated trash, lab waste and animals. Operation and cleaning of the unit incinerator and composter.
  • Assist in the decontamination of poultry facilities using formaldehyde gas. Must be able to lift 50lbs; pass a respirator physical exam and wear a full-face respirator.
  • Supervise and assist in performing basic maintenance work including painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical and grounds maintenance. Operate farm machinery including: front-end loader, tractor, mower and manure spreader. Available after hours to assist with farm emergencies.
  • Supervise and train salaried staff and biweekly employees in proper performance of routine farm duties.
  • Temporarily perform the duties of the Poultry Farm Manager in their absence.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED with three years of farm experience operating various types of equipment and machinery. Knowledge of poultry/livestock management preferred.
  • Basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical and/or mechanical skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • This position will require a Federal background check.
  • Valid drivers license

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONS EXPOSURE:
  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in cramped areas and positions for extended periods of time, climb ladders, wear respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to work after normal working hours to assist with farm emergencies and on weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.
