Educational Technology Consultant I

PAY GRADE: 27S

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Academic Technology Services' (IT-ATS) functional areas include instructional design, digital media support, instructional video and conferencing support, and learning management system support. IT-ATS staff assist faculty in enhancing student learning through the appropriate application of technology. IT-ATS services include online course design and program development, student response systems, classroom recording through UD Capture, video conferencing facilities, video hosting, in-class technical instruction, and numerous faculty development programs.

Academic Technology Services is a partner in operating Faculty Commons at the University of Delaware. Faculty Commons is a collection of campus support units who work collectively to determine the best course of action and develop appropriate solutions.

The Educational Technology Consultant I (Instructional Designer) helps faculty improve teaching and learning through the effective application of technology. This position is responsible for teaching faculty about best practices and documenting evidence-based approaches. The incumbent also provides support for learning management systems, personal response systems, web technologies, and other instructional technologies e.g. for presentations, collaboration, visualization, and feedback. The Ed Tech Consultant I contributes to the unit's substantive and meaningful technology contributions to teaching and learning in order to ultimately raise the attractiveness of UD for new faculty and students.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Applies instructional design principles to the creation and deployment of new online courses and programs. Working with online program directors and faculty, contributes to the online project management, from needs analysis to evaluation, as part of a continuous improvement process.

• Designs and develops course materials that meet learning objectives. Working with subject-matter experts, assists in the production of multimedia content and visualizations to provide the most effective learning experience while addressing student motivation and other online learning considerations.

• Assists in development of academic technology support processes that leverage existing infrastructure and emerging technology, are sustainable and cost effective, and expand upon a portfolio of resources. Performs usability testing and requirement analysis on learning applications.

• Answers Instructure Canvas learning management system application questions. Troubleshoots client problems. Monitors, documents, tests, solves, and follows-up on client trouble-ticket incidents.

• Administers and helps develop policies and procedures for faculty and staff regarding online resources, using collaboration and communication tools, and allowing students access to course information. Helps faculty and staff make better use of learning management systems and connecting applications. Identifies and automates routine tasks for better efficiency.

• Consults with faculty to enhance teaching and learning through evidence-based applications of technology. Assists with the analysis of learning needs and helps develop effective technology-based solutions in support of successful learning outcomes. Proactively engages faculty by suggesting strategies for teaching challenges and following through to ensure their successful execution.

• Plans, designs, and produces high-quality documentation and training workshops for faculty using technology. Delivers training workshops in face-to-face presentations or online learning modules.

• Assists in supporting the use of learning technologies, such as student response systems, course capture systems, classroom technologies, and collaborative tools.

• Maintains current knowledge of educational technologies and laws guiding higher education (copyright, FERPA, etc.). Evaluates the potential of emerging technologies to aid the learning process.

• Establishes and maintains appropriate working relationships with colleagues and clients and follows University and department policies and procedures governing IT efforts. Works within the department's overall strategic plan following project priorities and scope, Meets deadlines and achieves goals.

• Performs other job related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree and two years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. A degree in instructional technology, education, communication, computer science, or other related field preferred.

• Experience in education technology in a higher education setting is preferred.

• Comprehensive understanding of educational technology demonstrated by the ability to assess and articulate whether or not a technical solution adds value to the learning process

• Experience in supporting a learning management system. Experience supporting the Instructure Canvas learning management system a plus.

• Experience with a broad range of educational technologies including programs that aid in the development of synchronous and asynchronous online learning modules, web editing, collaborative and video and multimedia technologies.

• Proven ability to get buy-in from faculty for the adoption of new technologies or processes.

• Effective communication (oral, written, listening, presentation) and organization skills.

• Effective customer service skills.

• Requires analytical, evaluative, and objective critical thinking skills.

• Project management skills, ability to manage multiple projects and be detail oriented.

• Ability to design, develop, and evaluate instructional materials and programs.

• Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical clients.

• Ability to work independently and in flexible on-campus work environments, as well as work within collaborative teams of people with diverse skills.

• Ability to work effectively with clients with a wide range of technical expertise and in a rapidly changing technical environment.
