Director, Fraternity and Sorority Leadership & Learning, University of Delaware

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Student Life and Executive Director of Residence Life and Housing (AVPED), the Director provides visionary leadership as the senior member of a department that serves close to 5000 students (30% of the undergraduate student population), in close to 50 fraternities and sororities and 11 chapter houses.

The Director has responsibility for the programmatic and administrative day-to-day management of a dynamic, complex, and growing unit with four governing councils (Interfraternity Council, IFC; Panhellenic Council: Multicultural Greek Congress, MGC; and Special Interest Greek Council, SIGC), supporting each while concurrently shaping a holistic sense of Fraternity and Sorority life at UD. The Director is charged with serving as the champion of the student experience within these entities, and strategically guiding the unit to evolve and grow as necessary to support growth in student participation and reflect best practices nationally.

The Director implements educational and leadership programs to effectively guide the fraternity and sorority community, and outlines policies and expectations to educate students/chapters regarding community standards which include risk management strategies. The Director directly supervises an Assistant Director, and an Administrative Assistant; and indirectly supervises two Program Coordinators and other student staff members.

The position requires the Director to work collaboratively with numerous campus departments, students, parents, faculty, chapter advisors, national offices, alumni, Newark community members, and other stakeholder groups as they strive to embed the fraternity and sorority life community as a positive force at UD. The Director is an active member of Student Life Senior Leadership (SLSL), serves on numerous institutional committees, and represents the University at Fraternity and Sorority Life and UD events.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • As a member of SLSL, work with the AVPED and Vice President for Student Life (VPSL) to formulate department policies and practices that support student success and learning.
  • Direct unit strategic planning; inspire a shared mission and vision among staff, fraternity and sorority officer, and student participants; articulate clear core values and aspirational annual unit goals.
  • Serve as the champion for the student experience in fraternities and sororities, striving to help chapters achieve their highest aspirations through educational, rewarding, socially positive, fun, and engaging means. This entails advocating for students on issues related to co-curricular education, leadership opportunities, intercultural and diversity opportunities, student satisfaction, safety, facilities, etc.
  • Develop and support the achievement of learning outcomes related to participation in fraternities and sororities that support Division learning outcomes.
  • Oversee major department assessment projects related to student satisfaction and learning and contribute to broader division assessment efforts.
  • Oversee member recruitment practices and modify processes, timelines, and protocols in alignment with National procedures and guidelines to ensure educational and academic integrity that supports student success and the values of Blue Hens. Create systems to both recruit and sustain membership in smaller chapters.
  • Work with Nationals and appropriate governing councils on expansion decisions and protocols.
  • Oversee the implementation of the annual Chapter Assessment Program (CAP).
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with chapter advisors, and hold regular advisor group meetings. Ensure advisors are trained and provided with clear expectations in collaboration with Nationals.
  • Work to appropriately align Fraternity and Sorority Life goals, priorities, and assessment activities to both guide and inform operations, policy development, and educational opportunities. Ensure coordination of efforts between FSLL and other academic and administrative units and have regular contact with senior University officials, faculty, parents, and chapter leaders.
  • Regularly review, modify, and implement crisis management and conduct violation protocols and procedures, in consultation with both the Dean of Students, and Director of Student Conduct. Outline risk management strategies and work closely with the university conduct system to hold students and/or chapters appropriately accountable for inappropriate behaviors.
  • Serve as the UD representative along with the City of Newark Fire and Safety Inspector, City of Newark Property Maintenance Inspector, and UD Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) in presenting the required Fall Semester Fire and Safety Training for the 11 Chapters with official houses. Follow-up with required House Inspections and Re-inspections as necessary. Conduct inspections both the Fall and the Spring Semesters.
  • Develop and administer annual administrative budgets totaling approximately $425,000.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness of national trends and concerns in higher education, fraternity and sorority life, risk management, student affairs, and student needs and develop effective strategies to keep the department at an advanced state relative to trends and competitors.
  • Provide excellent office and staff supervision, and promote group development and team building within the department.
  • Maintain open communication and collaborative relationships with chapters' national headquarters.
  • Be visible within the University, and make institutional outreach a cornerstone of the position.
  • Direct department efforts on international student and domestic diversity initiatives focused on the development of welcoming and inclusive communities and student-to-student engagement. Oversee department efforts to provide opportunities for intercultural competency development of staff and students.
  • Direct student leadership and student governance development, community engagement, and student engagement initiatives.
  • Develop a UD FSLL alumni network. Work with Development and Alumni Relations and Career Services to connect current students with past FSLL members and advance internship and employment opportunities. Coordinate department annual giving initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in higher education administration, or related field with eight years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Doctorate preferred.
  • Significant professional experience involving fraternity and sorority advisement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of fraternities and sororities, and a commitment to shaping environments in which students are trained and mentored as campus leaders; student personnel administration; organizational and group dynamics, student development issues and theory; cultural fluency and diversity and inclusion; and customer service standards and procedures.
  • Ability to create and sustain an organizational culture focused on student learning and success.
  • Experience in supervision, effective employee development, training design and facilitation, and performance management.
  • Ability to achieve goals; establish unit priorities; develop, plan, and implement short and long-range unit goals; formulate policy; organize resources.
  • Ability to direct crisis management activities and facilitate procedures for distressed students; direct and uphold policies and regulations that pertain to F&SL and to student development; and resolve student and parent complaints and concerns.
  • Advanced knowledge of Fraternal Information Programming Group (FIPG) National Policies, Title IX, Clery Act, and ADA directives and guidance.
  • Ability to analyze problems and strategically develop and communicate creative solutions to complex issues.
  • Ability to interpret and design qualitative and quantitative studies related to fraternity and sorority life, college student learning, and satisfaction.
  • Ability to understand University sustainability goals and incorporate them into work tasks.
