Data Analyst - College of Health Sciences

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

This position is for a mid-level analyst and data manager to aid in data analysis, database design, and implementation of data management systems (such as REDCap) for research projects within the University of Delaware's College of Health Sciences. The analyst will join the Biostats Core Factility, which provides statistical support to faculty and student investigators doing basic, translational, and clinical research. Additionally, the core facility offers assistance with complex dataset planning, and management. The position requires a familiarity with statistical software (SPSS, R, SAS) and basic database skills for manipulating research and clinical data, performing quality control checks, producing analytic datasets, and doing basic statistical analyses. All work will require application of Good Clinical Data Management Practices (GCDMP).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist investigators in planning research designs on observational and interventional studies; will assist on those resulting in contracts or grants.
  • Determine from discussions the purposes and objectives of various studies and implement data collection and analysis strategies accordingly.
  • With a Sr. Biostatistician, meet with investigators to discuss statistical analyses to address research aims and objectives, as well as summarize and interpret results for investigators after completion of analysis sets.
  • Help prepare proposals for small to medium size health research projects. Meet with research teams to clarify project requirements and timelines for data management activities. A senior staff member will supervise work for more complex projects.
  • Work with research teams to setup, create, and edit data acquisition forms for research projects often using a data management system such as REDCap, and provide input based on Good Clinical Data Management Practices.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing with research team during the process of study design, data collection and data entry to develop data collection forms and detect/correct data errors. Attend meetings, conferences, workshops and other activities required by the study team.
  • Determine and document the structure, organization, and storage/archiving of study data.
  • Help perform regular quality control (QC) checks of study data. Work with study personnel to address issues that can affect data quality and integrity, such as system issues, data entry errors, and data collection errors, ensuring a high-quality database at all times.
  • Prepare datasets and provide supporting documentation for statistical analysis, under the guidance and supervision of senior staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of experience performing analyses, programming/designing databases, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Statistics/Biostatistics, Public Health/Epidemiology, Computer Science, Mathematics or related field preferred.
  • Experience designing data collection procedures as well as administrating, designing, and querying databases (MS Access, SQL), using REDCap or another data collection system.
  • Experience in research study design, choosing appropriate basic statistical methods for cross-sectional and longitudinal research designs, performing basic analyses using statistical software (SAS, SPSS, R, JMP) and ability to convey results to investigator.
  • Technical writing skills focused on communicating all aspects of study design, data management, and analysis suitable for grant applications and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effectively communicating with investigators and collaborators as well as the ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with a research team.
  • Ability to organize, initiate, and work independently to address responsibilities; must have strong time management skills and ability to independently prioritize and re-prioritize work when there are changes in assignment, workload, and pressures of deadlines.
  • Strong critical thinking and organizational skills, detail oriented, and possess excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Other experience, including developing web applications in JavaScript, other languages (PHP, Phython, C, or Java), or querying from EMR systems considered a plus.
