Career Counselor (Policy & Social Impact Career Coach/Pre-Law Advisor)

PAY GRADE: 29E

CONTEXT OF JOB:

The Career Services Center (CSC) is a highly dynamic office committed to empowering all students to develop and achieve their professional aspirations. Within the context of three teams, Career Development and Campus Engagement (CDCE), Employer and Alumni Engagement (EAE), and Operations, Communications & Analysis (OCA), staff engage alumni, parents, faculty, administrators and employers to facilitate students' transition from college to career.

Under the general direction of an Assistant Director on the CDCE team, the professional is responsible for the creation and application of career related services and programs for students and alumni in the CSC's Policy & Social Impact Career Community, serves as a primary pre-law advisor for the university and supports operational and strategic initiatives within the office. The successful candidate will also possess a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as be able to engage stakeholders through effective communications and programming.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Policy & Social Impact Career Community Counseling, Coaching, Programming & Engagement (40%)
  • Counsel and coach students and alumni regarding career decision-making, developing and enhancing professional skills, managing an internship, job or graduate school search processes, resume writing, interviewing and networking.
  • Develop, manage and lead career-related programs, workshops, presentations, panel discussions and other events.
  • Collaborate with career community EAE team representative to develop connections with employers and alumni for meetups, career fairs, bus treks and other recruiting and career education programs.
  • Serve as liaison to most programs in the Social Sciences division of the College of Arts & Sciences by establishing new and enhanced relationships with administrators, advisors and faculty and develop partnerships to infuse career education and internships into the academic experience.
  • Seek out, enhance, and update resources and materials related to industry trends and feedback from major stakeholders.
  • Develop weekly career community emails and sand alone email promotions in collaboration with the OCA team.
  • Maintain and develop partnerships with student organization leaders, delivering career-related programs to organization members and securing co-sponsorship of major career-related events; develop and implement effective ways to promote Career Services among student organizations.
  • Participate in professional development to keep abreast of industry trends and best practices.


Pre-law Advising, Programming & Law School Engagement (40%)
  • Provide educational services and support to students and alumni interested in attending law school/pursuing legal careers, which includes:
  • Informing advisees about skills/knowledge for success in law school, and suggesting curricular/co-curricular opportunities to develop these areas.
  • Providing information on law schools including rankings/other statistics and evaluating advisees' chances of obtaining admission.
  • Assisting advisees with the law school application process, inclusive of personal statements, letters of recommendations, taking the LSAT, etc.
  • Providing support and offering relevant resources for underrepresented/marginalized law school applicants.
  • Discussing financial responsibilities including paying for law school, debt incurred, and income expectations.
  • Participate in New Student Orientation and recruitment events.
  • Collaborate with other UD administrators, faculty and staff engaged in pre-law, legal preparation, and legal studies related academic and administrative initiatives.
  • Offer programs, workshops, and outreach to assist students as they make their decision whether to pursue law school.
  • Coordinate the annual campus Law School Fair with the CSC's Events Manager.
  • Collect law school admission data and prepare an annual pre-law report.
  • Maintain network of faculty, attorneys and law students as advising resources.
  • Connect with pre-law advisors and law school admissions representatives.
  • Advise pre-law related student organizations.


Additional CSC Related Responsibilities (20%)
  • Act as the liaison for Division of Student Life (DSL) and other university units to deliver career-related programs and initiatives.
  • Provide CSC representation on DSL and university committees
  • Collaborate on additional CSC initiatives such as supervising a team of student employees, developing diversity and inclusion related initiatives and creating web and print content.
  • Design, develop, schedule and conduct presentations on career and professional development topics to populations outside of the assigned career community.
  • Perform other job-related duties assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree and one to three years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work with a wide range of constituents in a diverse community are required.
  • Strong ability to engage and collaborate with faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, employers, and law school representatives.
  • Excellent presentation, public speaking and group facilitation skills.
  • Strong organization and planning skills, managing and prioritizing many projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledge and understanding of college student population, in particular pre-law students.
  • Understanding of law school admissions.
  • Ability to participate in evening/ weekend programming (occasional travel will be necessary).
