Business Administrator, Sociology

The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware is a large academic unit offering two undergraduate degrees and four graduate degrees. Each year, the department has about 700 undergraduate majors and approximately 45 graduate students. The permanent faculty of 27 members is supplemented by up to 10 adjunct professors. SOCI oversees and supports a large research center, the Center for Drug and Health Studies and assists with the management of the Disaster Research Center. These centers have a staff of faculty, professionals, and salaried workers, in addition to undergraduate and graduate student assistants.

Under general direction of the department Chairperson, the Business Administrator I performs and/or oversees a variety of associated and highly complex administrative, fiscal, staff support and planning activities for the department and its research centers. Responsibilities require advanced or specialized knowledge and skills and include managing and administering multiple budgets for which the Chairperson/others have management oversight and fiscal responsibility, including grants and contract administration, budget development and maintenance, and monitoring and administering department finances. Responsible for all Human Resources related activities, developing and implementing policies for specific activities within the unit; serving as liaison with other University departments and units and the general public, especially prospective graduate students; supervising staff and managing the daily administrative operations of the department; providing support to the chairperson including analysis and interpretation of complex data related to graduate admissions trends; and resolving administrative and procedural problems.

The principal emphasis for this position is on performing high-level administrative or financial functions requiring the exercise of regular independent judgment and discretion. This is a supervisory position with high expectations for positive and collaborative teamwork, flexibility, and critical-thinking skills.
