Associate/Full Professor in Literacy

Associate or Full Professor in Literacy

University of Delaware

The School of Education in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Delaware (http://www.education.udel.edu/) invites applications for an outstanding scholar in literacy. The ideal candidate has made substantial contributions to the field of literacy and has an exemplary research record that includes external grants. We seek a colleague at the advanced associate or professor level, who would be tenured at the time of appointment. The start date of the position is September 1, 2018.

We are seeking a colleague to join a highly successful and productive literacy team whose ten members have garnered over $8 million dollars of external funding in the past three years. A successful candidate will have a scholarly specialization in literacy research and theory on topics of national importance, including, but not limited to, early literacy and language development, reading or writing acquisition, assessment and intervention for struggling learners, the use of technology to promote literacy, and/or English Learners. The individual hired for this position will engage in rigorous research; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; participate in service activities designed to further the mission of the University, College, and School; and advise doctoral students within a Ph.D. specialization in literacy.

The successful candidate will design and conduct externally-funded research, sometimes in collaboration with other faculty in the College, on topics of national importance. The existing literacy faculty have received external grants from the Institute of Education Sciences, state agencies, and private foundations. The School is particularly interested in candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and equal opportunities through leadership in research, inclusive teaching, and public engagement and outreach. Scholars from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

The School of Education within the College of Education and Human Development has over 50 full-time and jointly appointed faculty, nearly 600 undergraduate majors and minors and 360 graduate students. The School offers an undergraduate major in elementary teacher education and undergraduate minors in educational studies, educational technology, and urban education. We support several robust graduate programs at both the master's and doctoral level including a fully online M.Ed. in literacy, a Ph.D. program in education, and an Ed.D. in educational leadership. Faculty in the School of Education are highly research active in areas spanning language and literacy, mathematics education, the science of learning, sociocultural approaches, and educational policy. Faculty research is externally supported from numerous foundations and from federal agencies such as the Institute for Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. In the last several years, faculty have garnered external funding in excess of $21 million and the college ranks among the top nationally in obtaining federal support for education research. Faculty in the School of Education are recognized for their contributions to national conversations about critical educational issues, lead organizations working to address those issues, and provide a range of supports to the agencies at the front lines of improving educational opportunities and outcomes. The faculty are a methodologically diverse and collegial group of nationally and internationally known scholars.
