Assistant Vice President, Regional and Global Programs

PAY GRADE: 34S

CONTEXT OF JOB:

With the campaign priority of "Extending our Impact on the Region and the World", we are seeking an Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Regional and Global Programs to provide strategic leadership and oversight for a regionally-and globally based development program at UD. This program will strengthen and transform the University's relationships with alumni, donors, and friends in areas of the United States and the world where there are high concentrations of UD alums and friends.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President of Development, the AVP is responsible for the establishment and achievement of fundraising goals for regional and global programs by making connections with people and inspiring them to support UD in creating a dynamic environment for discovery. The focus and major emphasis of the position is leading and motivating the team responsible for enhancing the University's presence and reputation in various U.S. regions as well as internationally. The AVP is responsible for managing the major gifts and leadership annual giving fundraising activity, including identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift and leadership annual giving donors. The AVP will build a team of regionally focused major gift officers ($100,000 or more) as well as be responsible for developing a pipeline of alumni, parents, friends donors and international prospects to the University of Delaware.

The AVP will demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities and will have an open, creative problem-solving approach, and strong orientation toward teams and collaboration, with an understanding of using metrics to motivate and track good work and program progress. The AVP must have expertise in strategic talent management and experience in successful leadership in a campaign setting.

Major Responsibilities
  • Create and implement a regionally and globally focused development program. Lead and manage directors of development in each region who focus on securing major gifts in addition to a regionally focused leadership annual giving program. Lead international advancement strategy and continue to build international principal gifts. Responsible for personnel growth as needed.
  • Works with Vice President and Senior Associate Vice President to establish goals and objectives for each Region. Collaborates across the department to reach shared goals.
  • Work closely with DAR staff and colleagues across the University to develop and manage engagement, solicitation and stewardship strategies for regional and global prospects and donors.
  • Plan, staff and brief senior University and academic administrators and faculty for regional and global prospect/donor visits and events as necessary.
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate progress toward individual and team goals and objectives.
  • With the Senior Associate Vice President of Development, design and implement training and skill building programs for directors of development and volunteers engaged in fundraising.
  • Collaborate with University leadership to inspire trust, encourage creative thinking, and recruit and mentor a high performing team of Directors of Development.
  • Manage the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individual prospects with a focus on gifts of $100,000 or higher. Manage a portfolio of 100 prospects and makes ten prospect visits per month.
  • Plan, recommend and carry out strategies for University-wide donor cultivation activities.
  • Participate in the prospect solicitation clearance process and provide support to the prospect solicitation tracking process.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred; minimum of six years of progressively responsible job experience. Experience in major gift fundraising required, preferably in a university or college environment. Experience managing staff is required. Experience working in a capital campaign is highly desirable. A full commitment to the success of the mission and high standards of achievement are expected in this position. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with prospects and donors, to work effectively in a team setting, and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; strong interpersonal skills. Must have a sincere appreciation for people and how they are each uniquely motivated. Ability to persuade and influence others. Able to perform tasks on own initiative, many of which have no prior precedent. Skill in developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Must be skilled at team building to inspire, motivate and engage others and be a stimulating communicator. Skill in use of personal computers and related software applications. Ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community. Possess strong self-motivation.

Significant local and domestic travel required.
