Assistant Director of Sponsored Research Accounting

PAY GRADE: 32E

DEADLINE: Open until filled

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under the limited direction of the Associate Director, Post-Award Administration, the Assistant Director of Sponsored Research Accounting is responsible for the post-award financial and administrative management and oversight of the University's externally funded sponsored programs and other restricted funds to ensure compliance with governing federal, state, sponsor, University requirements and generally accepted accounting principles.

This position serves as key resource providing guidance, oversight and support to faculty, researchers and staff relating to the post-award activities of the University's sponsored programs. The incumbent is expected to foster collaborative relationships with stakeholders and exhibit a strong commitment to customer service and excellence.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Management of post-award fiscal administration, including compliance with funding agency requirements for sponsored grants and other restricted funds awarded to the University. Responsible for overall supervision of assigned area and staff.
  • Responsible for the financial and administrative reporting and closeout of assigned sponsored programs and restricted funds. Supervises the preparation of and accuracy of all financial and other administrative reports required ensuring established deadlines are met. Manages the status of awards to determine which require analysis, interpretation, reporting, and agency or departmental action. Reviews the finalization of all awards which are ending to determine the final allowable costs in support of the University's claim.
  • Formulate processes and procedures for the accounting, reporting and closeout of all sponsored awards to meet requirements, develop and provide training and disseminate award management information to stakeholders that supports compliance of the funded programs
  • Supervision of the sponsored research accounting team, delegation of assignments to meet deadlines, review staff productivity and efficiency and mentor their professional development to ensure high quality financial reporting that is timely, accurate and compliant with governing policies and procedures. Directs staff in adhering to governing policies and procedures and day to day oversight and monitoring.
  • Serve as a key grant accounting and post-award resource. Research appropriate federal, state, sponsor and/or University requirements to facilitate compliance by all parties; perform, lead, and/or guide arbitration and resolution of conflicting interests, as necessary. Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state, and University regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Oversee award closeouts to ensure compliance with Federal, State and University policies and procedures and appropriateness of terms and conditions and filed within required deadlines.
  • Participate in annual financial statement and Uniform Guidance audit activities. Participate in sponsor monitoring visits and assists Associate Director with desk reviews and audits, as required.
  • Manage and oversee the post-award administration of high-profile and/or more complex sponsored programs.
  • Participate in the long range planning for the Research Office and assist with setting the direction of post-award sponsored administration for the campus.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree and at least four years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Higher education experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of OMB Circulars, A-21, A-110, A-133, Uniform Guidance and other pertinent external regulations. Working knowledge of federal policies and procedures, especially with NIH and NSF
  • Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles. Knowledge of the University's financial and administrative systems and experience in research administration is preferred.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments in a professional manner
  • Experience with Oracle/PeopleSoft Financials desirable
