Assistant Director (Fraternity & Sorority Life)

PAY GRADE: 30E

DEADLINE: Open until filled CONTEXT OF JOB:

Under general direction of the Senior Associate Director, the Assistant Director advises the University's fraternity and sorority system comprised of national Chartered Greek organizations and fraternal interest groups. The Assistant Director interprets and enforces University policies and procedures and National and local Greek policies. The incumbent administers the new colony process and expansion procedures. The incumbent administers the Chapter Assessment Program (CAP), and develops and coordinates other programs aimed at recognized Greek organizations. Oversees and provides leadership to Fraternity and Sorority Life governing councils, and supervises two Program Coordinators. The Assistant Director develops learning outcomes and conducts program assessment for Fraternity and Sorority Life.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Advise recognized chartered Greek organizations and new colonies. Directly advise the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Congress, Panhellenic Council, and Special Interest Greek Councils. Provide advice, mediation, and support to individual fraternity/sorority chapters and their members. Serve as first level liaison to Greek organization advisors.


  • Supervise two Program Coordinators and office staff who provide Fraternity and Sorority Life educational training programs and advisement to individual chapters and councils.


  • Interpret and enforce University Code of Conduct and policies and procedures specific to recognized Chartered Greek organizations. Supervise and approve the development of new colonies and expansion of the Fraternity and Sorority system. Enforce and review University financial policies, and approve governing council expenditures in compliance with policy. Oversee mandatory recruitment periods, and Chapter compliance with UD and national policies related to hazing, discrimination, alcohol and drug use, liability, and risk management.


  • Develop, Initiate, and coordinate educational and leadership development programs for both potential and experienced student leaders. Provide training on risk management, hazing prevention, alcohol and drug use prevention, Title IX, Clery Act, sexual assault/rape awareness, health and safety, diversity; and other appropriate topics.


  • Liaison with alumni advisors, regional consultants, and national offices of Fraternity and Sorority systems. Keep national offices informed of Chapter conduct status at the University. Assist with Chapter suspensions and re-establishment of Chartered Greek organizations.


  • Coordinate Chapter Assessment Program (CAP) for fraternities and sororities. Collect and evaluate significant data related to the program. Maintain records for Fraternity and Sorority Life including fraternal membership rosters, individual chapter grade reports, and system-wide grade calculations.


  • Report information and act as a resource for the Senior Associate Director of the University Student Centers for Event Services involving UD and City of Newark Chapter house inspections both on and off campus. Maintain information regarding University, City of Newark, and State fire, health, safety and housing codes.


  • Support and advocate the mission and programs of the University Student Centers in meeting strategic goals, student learning outcomes, assessment and school spirit.


  • Assist with the development and supervision of major campus programs and University-wide events including, but not limited to, opening weekend events, Student Activities Night, major concerts and speakers, and other University Student Centers and Division of Student Life program initiatives.


  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in Student Personnel Administration or other related discipline and three years related experience.
  • Previous work specifically with fraternities and sororities, leadership, and student development.
  • Understanding, respect, and appreciation of cultural diversity.
  • Effective organizational and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Administrative and procedural decision-making skills, related to sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Event coordination and production experience preferred.
  • Ability to understand and articulate University policy, state and federal laws and financial procedures applicable to student organizations and their activities.
  • Mediation and behavioral management skills preferred.
  • Effective emergency management preferred.
  • Crisis intervention techniques preferred.
  • Supervisory experience of full-time exempt and non-exempt staff.
