CONTEXT OF JOB:

The Delaware Center for Teacher Education (DCTE) is located in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Delaware. DCTE provides support services to professional education candidates, faculty, and staff in more than 25 educator preparation programs (EPPs) at the University. These undergraduate and graduate programs are located in six of the seven colleges across campus and include approximately 1,400 candidates and approximately 100 faculty and staff. Almost all of the EPPs require candidates to complete clinical experiences during their coursework, including a student teaching/internship experience.

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The DCTE Assistant Director serves as the primary University liaison to schools/school districts for field placements. As a member of the DCTE staff and under general direction of the Center Director, the Assistant Director works closely with faculty, staff, and schools/school districts on placing candidates from specified EPPs in high quality clinical experiences that will promote their professional growth. The placements include early field experiences, teaching methods course experiences, and student teaching/internships. The Assistant Director prepares clinical educators for their role with candidates in the field and ensures that the Office of Clinical Studies communicates timely and important information about clinical experiences to candidates, faculty, staff, and school personnel.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of memoranda of understanding between the University and schools/school districts related to clinical experiences.
  • Work with University faculty and staff and school teachers, leaders, and district human resource managers on arranging high quality placements for candidates in specified programs. Build collaborative relationships with school personnel, identify new field placements, and create efficient protocols for making placements.
  • Provide candidates, their clinical educators, and their program coordinators and/or course instructors with information about placements, respond to their inquiries, and engage in problem solving related to placements.
  • Design professional development modules in collaboration with faculty and staff that help clinical educators support candidates with their emerging practice. Manage the online modules, conduct in-person presentations on the modules, monitor completion rates, and communicate with clinical educators about completing it.
  • Initiate and implement new activities, policies, and procedures to enhance clinical experiences. Provide leadership on committees related to the educator preparation programs.
  • Create and update forms and other documents for candidates, faculty, staff, and school personnel in collaboration with faculty and staff related to clinical experiences and services provided by the Office of Clinical Studies. Oversee the Office of Clinical Studies website.
  • Oversee the collection of data related to clinical experiences. Analyze the data to continually improve field placements and related services. Complete requests for data from faculty, staff, and policies.
  • Hire and coordinate part-time supervisors for courses with field experiences in specified programs.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in a field related to education.
  • Five years of experience in a P-12 educational setting and/or directly related to the job responsibilities.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with adolescents or young adults.
    • Has knowledge of current best practices in clinical preparation.
    • Has a positive disposition and is flexible.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and the education community and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
    • Ability to work independently, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, attend to details, complete tasks accurately, and work with deadlines.
    • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
    • Ability to solve problems, be resourceful, and design effective policies and procedures.
    • Has knowledge of technology, such as Excel, Access, learning management systems, and video processing.
    • Teaching experience (P-12 or higher education) and/or working in a university setting preferred.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have regular access to a private reliable means of transportation and able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
