Academic Program Coordinator

PAY GRADE: 29E

CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The Center for Academic Success assists the University of Delaware with the retention of students through its collection of academic support programs, services and activities. Under the general direction of the Associate Director of the University Studies Program: Center for Academic Success, the Academic Program Coordinator works primarily with the UD Scholars Program providing a full range of general counseling/mentoring activities and acts as an advocate for students having difficulties. The UD Scholars Program includes an intensive living learning experience for approximately 30 first year students, who are identified in the admissions process as academically talented but lacking in preparation. UD Scholars receive intensive programming and support to increase their ability to excel at the University. The Academic Program Coordinator will work closely with, and be accountable to, the collaborative partners for this project, including the Office of Admissions and the Center for Academic Success and University Studies Program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with the faculty leadership team for the UD Scholars to plan the overall program.
  • Plan and implement the day to day activities of the UD Scholars Program.
  • Work closely with the Admissions Office, University Studies, and other departments to connect UD Scholars with services across the University of Delaware.
  • Plan and oversee the summer program for the UD Scholars, including hiring and supervising the student peer mentors.
  • Teach a First Year Seminar course.
  • Hold regular meetings with the first-year Scholars during fall and spring semesters to support academic success and retention.
  • Organize activities for all UD Scholars (e.g., second year Scholars) and conduct regular individual meetings with all Scholars.
  • Develop, adopt, enforce, oversee, and/or implement policies and procedures on a range of student affairs issues; coordinate and enforce policies and procedures, and ensure compatibility with university-wide policies.
  • Determine and interpret student services needs on an individual basis, and initiate referrals to appropriate student and/or academic services; advise students on policy issues, act as student advocate, and resolve problems as necessary.
  • Collect and analyze data, develop reports designed to evaluate effectiveness of the program and services; help maintain and update publication information.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in education, educational administration, counseling, career counseling, student development, social work or other related field and three years' related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience providing services to individuals at risk, preferably in a postsecondary setting.
  • Training or experience in issues pertaining to college student development, counseling theories and practices, using diagnostic tests in counseling, career development and multicultural topics.
  • Knowledge of retention issues and strategies pertaining to project-eligible participants and of postsecondary institutional and community resources.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of academic policies and procedures.
  • Experience with University of Delaware Student Information System (UDSIS) preferred.
  • Ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records and to communicate course prerequisites, certification, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements
