The Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching & Service (CSJ) serves as a hub for Georgetown undergraduates, graduate students, staff, and faculty to enact the University’s social justice mission and animate its Jesuit values in three key areas: community and public service, curriculum and pedagogy, and engaged research. CSJ includes 15 full-time staff, a cohort of 13 graduate assistants, 26 faculty and staff fellows, over 150 student leaders, and over 1,600 undergraduates engaged in CSJ’s programs, student organizations, and projects each year. CSJ collaborates with dozens of diverse partners and communities in Washington, DC and globally. Rooted in Ignatian pedagogy, reflection, and student formation, CSJ focuses on racial equity, environmental justice, and approaching solidarity with our community partners through a wide range of programs. CSJ’s programmatic areas of expertise are in literacy, juvenile justice, early childhood literacy, ethical and reciprocal immersion, homelessness, supporting the immigrant community, and beyond.

The Assistant Director for Educational Equity Programs is a full-time position responsible for supervising, mentoring, and coaching Georgetown students in service and social justice commitments through literacy, math, and science programs targeted for PK3 through 5^th grade youth. This position develops programs and activities for Georgetown students to learn about education policies, practice, and advocacy. Responsibilities include direct management and coordination, financial oversight, and evaluation of the DC Reads, STEM Afterschool, and the Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning programs. This position supervises a full-time professional staff member, the Jumpstart Site Manager. The Assistant Director also supervises one to two graduate assistants who will provide capacity for program management and coordination of CSJ Education Equity portfolio of programs. The Assistant Director provides broad support to the outcomes of additional CSJ signature programs and student organizations with a focus on educational equity. This position’s portfolio of programs involves 160 student tutors, 25 student leaders, and 12 school and community center sites. The Assistant Director provides leadership to CSJ’s educational equity activities and will communicate and partner with a diverse audience of faculty, students, community partners, and families. This position reports to the CSJ Associate Director.

The Assistant Director participates in CSJ activities, including staff meetings, committees, and cross-program collaborations. These collaborations include CSJ’s youth field day and campus visits each semester (Fall Fest and Spring Fling) and educational awareness and advocacy events such as Education Week. The Assistant Director acts as a representative of CSJ in Washington, DC and university-wide activities, such as cross-departmental committees, position searches, and student organization activities.

Through DC Reads, Georgetown students provide tutoring for elementary school-aged youth, primarily in schools and community centers east of the Anacostia River in Washington, DC. The program focuses on literacy development through phonics, reading comprehension, and writing.

STEM Afterschool provides hands-on math and science projects for STEM enrichment and advancing math and science learning. Community partners and sites are linked with DC Reads sites as a strategy to provide a breadth of interventions to CSJ partners.

The Summer Institute for Teaching and Learning is an eight-week summer program through which undergraduate and graduate students provide afterschool, classroom-based programming and instruction to reduce summer learning loss in rising 1^st through 5^th graders in a DC Public Schools Summer School.

This position’s responsibilities also include collecting, reviewing, analyzing, and reporting on current research and issues at the intersection of education and social justice. This work has both a national and local focus and is used to guide and support CSJ’s work in issues of education equity.

Requirements and Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education, teaching, reading, literacy, or a related field. A Master’s Degree is highly preferred. A minimum of three to five years in community-based youth program management, classroom teaching, or comparable experience. An understanding of the environment of urban and public education is necessary, and knowledge of Washington, DC is a plus. Prior experience in curriculum-writing and literacy development is necessary. Prefer experience working with college students and volunteers, familiarity with university culture, and working in and with tutoring and mentoring knowledge and skills; strong written and oral communication skills; excellent group facilitation and communication skills; experience with budgeting, financial management, and grant management.
