Technical Assistant 1, UCP 4


The University of Connecticut College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science is seeking applicants for the position of Technical Assistant 1, UCP 4 for the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (CVMDL). Under the direction of the CVMDL Business Services Supervisor, the successful candidate will have duties and responsibilities to include but not limited to:

Primary responsibility for receiving, logging, and accessioning of veterinary medical diagnostic specimens in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Use a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMs) to assign accession numbers to specimens as an internal tracking number and enter patient information and client demographics. Label and store specimens according to established protocol prior to release to testing section. Communicate any information pertaining to the sample testing and sample integrity. Prepare veterinary medical diagnostic samples for shipment to referral laboratories for specialty testing following IATA and DOT regulations. Respond to client inquiries regarding pricing, specimen type, results/reporting. Manage tissue trim room for tissue processing specimen flow, records, and disposal of biological and chemical wastes and assist with maintenance of the inventory of equipment and supplies. Assist with office responsibilities for clientele inquiries, maintain inventory of office supplies for accessioning laboratory and answering multi-line phone system. Send preliminary and final diagnostic reports via mail, e-mail, and FAX. Assist with the generation of monthly activity reporting for case submissions and surveillance programs.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's Degree in specialty appropriate to department to be served with experience working in a laboratory setting.
  2. Demonstrated experience working in a medical, biomedical or veterinary medical laboratory.
  3. Physical ability to lift at least 40 pounds without assistance.
  4. Demonstrated experience with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  5. Excellent oral and written skills.
  6. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and proactive skill.
  7. Meticulous attention to details.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience with records management, a quality control environment and office support activities.
  2. Experience working in a postmortem facility.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work within short deadlines and to work effectively with fellow employees.
  4. Familiarity with medical terminology.
  5. Experience working with farm, laboratory, zoo, aquatic, or companion animals.
  6. Experience working with medical specimens.
  7. Experience/interest in working with students.
  8. Supervisory experience.

Appointment Terms

This is a full time position subject to renewal on an annual basis.
