Program Specialist 1 (UCP 6), Student Activities


The Division of Student Affairs at the University of Connecticut announces the opening of a full-time Program Specialist 1 (UCP 6) position in the Involvement and Leadership Office in the Department of Student Activities.

Duties and Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Assists in the planning, development, design implementation and evaluation of the leadership programs for student fee-funded organizations; includes advising and serving as a liaison to the advisors of the fee funded student organizations, providing leadership development and support services for student leaders in the student fee funded organizations. Advises on policies related to the student government and other fee-funded organizations; works with the Involvement Office to achieve program objectives; conducts studies, collects necessary data, evaluates information, and prepares analytical reports related to student government, fee-funded organizations, and Involvement Office Initiatives; serves as resource for staff, students, and others regarding information and techniques, requiring an advanced knowledge of the student government and all fee-funded organizations and relevant policies and procedures related to them; serves as the Advisor to some fee funded groups (including the Undergraduate Student Government and the fee-funded media groups); serves as the department and University liaison to the advisors and staff supporting other fee-funded student organizations; plans, develops and implements methods and techniques of informing / educating / training / recognizing student leaders; may develop topics, prepares information designed to communicate and interpret information to the students, staff, the public and others; is responsible for the successful completion of individual projects; is responsible for advising and conducting workshops, seminars and training sessions to instruct, inform and/or train student organization leaders and other groups/programs as necessary; coordinates and administers the election process for the fee-funded student organizations and other University-wide elections (e.g. Student Trustee, Foundation Board of Directors, etc.); may be responsible for various administrative duties as assigned, including, but not limited to assisting with the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of professional staff, undergraduate and graduate students; assisting with and monitoring program budgets; if applicable to the program, may assist in advising students regarding the development of independent study projects that take place in the Leadership Office; assist in advising and providing training for student leaders; represent the office programs and initiatives to external groups and serve as a liaison, as appropriate, between the student government, fee-funded organizations and various University departments; supervise fee funded group employees; performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in academic discipline appropriate or equivalent combination of education and experience; two to four years professional experience related to advising student government organizations and other large, complex student groups, and student organization advisor development and support); comprehensive knowledge of student governance organizations, leadership development and support services for student leaders in student governance organizations and other large, complex student groups, and student organizations advisor development and support and proven ability to apply related concepts, techniques and practices to carry out program objectives; proven ability to evaluate and produce reliable results, problem-solve and trouble shoot problems; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to actively foster a campus climate that is welcoming and supportive of the University's diverse student body and that encourages communication with and among campus constituencies; knowledge and familiarity with the use of personal computers and basic software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; willingness to work irregular and flexible hours.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or other related field; experience advising media student organizations; responsible oversight of a student government and/or other large complex fee-funded student organizations at the college level; knowledge and experience in developing, implementing, and supporting student development/leadership training programs; effective planning, organization, budgeting, and administrative skills; experience supervising staff; experience effectively managing multiple projects and programs.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, 12-month position. Anticipated salary in the low to mid 50's with excellent benefits. Anticipated start date is May 15, 2017.
