Program Manager (UCP 7)


The Office of First Year Programs & Learning Communities (FYP&LC) is seeking a full-time Program Manager who will lead the planning and implementation of courses and peer education programs to assist first year students with the successful transition to university life. Under the direction of the Executive Director of FYP&LC, the individual in this position will work collaboratively with faculty and staff from across the University who teach or participate within our programs in order to foster academic success and retention of undergraduate students. FYP&LC programs are designed to assist students in their transition from high school to college and to aid in their persistence, success, and retention at the University of Connecticut.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Manages the day-to-day operation and administration of the FYE program and other FYP&LC programs, including the delivery of services, administrative functions and supervision of staff and students.
  2. Recruits and supports instructors and partners; coordinates new instructor certification and review processes; performs relationship building and connects individuals to opportunities.
  3. Facilitates the development of curriculum and prepares instructional training and support for courses that includes regional campuses and programming relevant to the specific needs of those student populations; collaborates with programs or departments to develop expert-led lessons, campus field trips, and/or other opportunities.
  4. Manages course scheduling and enrollment and provides support for hundreds of course sections each year. Manages collection of syllabi and monitors instructor evaluations; develops, coordinates, and leads instructor training. Develops online templates and content in learning management systems such as HuskyCT and provides training for users.
  5. Teaches multiple First Year Experience (FYE) sections each semester and may participate and provide support to other program courses. Manages the planning and execution of meetings, activities, and events in collaboration with faculty, staff, and students, including an annual conference on the first year experience.
  6. Develops and executes a comprehensive peer mentor program and support of student leaders.
  7. Engages in public relations and promotional activities for the program, including maintaining FYE website content, overseeing social media outlets to engage students and other populations with FYP&LC programs, and the development of weekly newsletters for FYE instructors.
  8. Compiles, maintains, analyzes, and reports data and program information related to the retention, persistence, and graduation of first year students, as well as other areas of inquiry.
  9. Stays current on national standards for, and research on, the first year experience and represents the University's programs on a national level through participation in relevant conferences.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Master's degree in a relevant field and at least one (1) to two (2) years relevant experience. Those with a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three (3) years relevant experience may also be considered.
  2. Demonstrated and significant experience with first year and new student transitions at the college level.
  3. Working knowledge of college student development.
  4. Experience planning, organizing and leading workshops, trainings and related instructor and mentor materials and/or curriculum appropriate to program.
  5. Experience in curriculum design and evaluation.
  6. Advanced written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. Ability to successfully recruit, train, engage, and support volunteer instructors and students serving in a variety of roles.
  8. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
  9. Experience compiling, maintaining, and analyzing student retention and persistence data.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Ph.D. in higher education or related field.
  2. Demonstrated ability to independently implement programs and identify and resolve day-to-day problems
  3. Experience managing complex short- and long-term projects.
  4. Experience working with students at a large university.
  5. FYE or equivalent transition-type course curriculum development.
  6. Experience working with Learning Communities.
  7. Staff supervision experience .
