Information Technology Lead (Computer Technical Support Consultant 3, UCP 8), H


The University of Connecticut, University Information Technology Services (UITS), is seeking a highly technical and self-motivated Information Technology Lead for the University's Hartford campus. The successful candidate is an energetic IT professional who is excited by delivering "best in class" services. Currently, Hartford Information Technology Services is located in West Hartford; however, in August 2017, the West Hartford campus is moving to downtown Hartford. The site, anchored by the former Hartford Times building, will become a neighborhood campus fully intertwined with nearby cultural institutions and state and city government offices.

Under the direction of the Vice Provost for Information Technology & CIO and in cooperation with the Director of the Hartford Campus, the IT Lead serves as the central conduit for Central IT technology service offerings to the campus. This position provides advanced computer hardware, network, communications network and software installation and support, computer instruction, documentation, and consultation services to the academic community of the Hartford campus and other affiliates, on problems, solutions, implementations and services related to computing. The successful candidate will also provide technical and administrative coordination and leadership to members of the Hartford campus. The Hartford campus Information Technology Lead is a member of UITS' leadership team based in Storrs, CT.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensuring that complex software, hardware, networking or other IT problems, within the position's purview, are correctly and quickly resolved. Identifying, investigating and correcting existing or potential technical and procedural problems and ensuring documentation is completed and accurate.
  • Taking a leadership role in selecting, acquiring, and installing technology for a new lab, classroom, departmental office and/or help desk to support technology. Investigating new technologies and selecting new products for testing.
  • Conducting needs analysis and feasibility studies to recommend and coordinate computing system purchases and implementing administrative computing systems (i.e., campus-wide infrastructure) and academic computing systems.
  • Implementing disaster recovery, virus protection, and data back-up and recovery services for distributed servers and workstations.
  • Supervising IT staff. Identifying staffing needs and directing all routine personnel functions. Coordinating the supervision and training of student employees to assist in the support of computer consulting.
  • Serving as the primary, secondary and tertiary level support for technical issues on the Hartford campus. Ensuring that all technology needs for the campus are met within the guidelines of existing Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and published expectations.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  2. Three to five years of highly technical and progressively responsible experience.
  3. Demonstrated project management experience.
  4. Excellent attention to detail and demonstrated excellent communicating and writing skills.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work well with people, to organize workloads, to handle difficult problems, to work well under stress and to develop complex plans and strategies.
  6. Programming experience and training in one or more platforms and languages.
  7. High level of leadership, motivation, initiative, independence and responsibility.
  8. Ability to work well with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Training in supervision and administrative methodologies.
  2. Experience with computer hardware repair.
