Director of Communications (Publicity/Marketing Director), UCP 9


The School of Business is seeking a full-time Director of Communications (Publicity & Marketing Director, UCP 9). The incumbent will follow a dual reporting structure to both the School of Business Associate Dean of Graduate Programs and the Vice President for University Communications. The incumbent will be responsible for leading the communications and marketing office for the School of Business and stewarding the School's mission, vision and values internally and externally. The position will be based at the Storrs campus, but will require one day per week in Hartford. Evening and weekend hours, as well as in-state and out-of-state travel, will also be required on occasion in support of School programs and activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include but are not limited to:
  • Responsibility for overall development, implementation, management, and measurement of the School's comprehensive marketing efforts; ensuring that all activities in support of the school's strategic plan are presented effectively and successfully to all audiences and constituencies in order to fortify the school brand, support its mission, engage faculty and staff, and align with the university's branding strategy and guidelines; developing and managing all-encompassing communications to support the School's priorities.
  • Creating a content strategy identifying the messages and stories that will raise the visibility of the School nationally and around the world and supports school objectives.
  • Overseeing the maintenance and usage of marketing templates and standards for School of Business advertising and promotion, ensuring consistent messaging, style and tone.
  • Managing the development, publication of school-wide communications including high-level advanced publications such as a monthly e-magazine, biannual research e-newsletter and an annual dean's report, overseeing and participating in the writing, editing and creative development of all communications materials for the School.
  • Developing and managing a comprehensive distribution plan for integrating innovative channels and outreach across all the platforms in order to tell school stories and promote engagement, particularly with students, prospective students, alumni, and other target audiences.
  • Managing the School's social media presence and engagement efforts.
  • Collaborating closely with University Communications as well as associate deans and program directors, including academic directors, to design and manage recruitment marketing strategies in support of enrollment goals for the MBA, specialty MS degree, and Ph.D. programs, as well as certificate and other non-degree programs; leading the development and execution of an integrated marketing plan targeting prospective students across multiple digital and print channels, including all aspects of digital advertising (media buys and campaign execution for display, search engine and social media advertising, and content marketing as well as performance assessment and optimization), email marketing, website and collateral.
  • Overseeing School of Business messaging within the recruitment CRM and application system, ensuring programs provide high-touch and efficient communication and interaction with prospective students.
  • Pursuing and stewarding partnerships with external organizations to increase the visibility of the School in the community and among businesses.
  • Overseeing the marketing and promotion of special events and projects, including the annual Hall of Fame, xCITE, Geno Auriemma UConn Leadership Conference, and monthly graduate program info sessions, etc.
  • Developing and executing effective measurement tools and processes to organize, manage and assess all marketing initiatives.
  • Directing and overseeing the work assignments and schedules of employees; directing overseeing, evaluating and managing third-party vendor relationships to ensure work assignments, schedules and results are meeting the needs of the school.
  • Recommending required funding to carry out strategic marketing plans for the School of Business; preparing and managing budgets.
  • Supervising general office operations for the School of Business Office of Communications.
  • Supervising the research, writing, fact checking and editing of news and feature stories for School of Business publications both in print and on the web.
  • Establishing and maintaining strategic relationships with various mediums to generate positive publicity for the School of Business, including all academic departments, programs & centers.
  • Representing and/or promoting the School of Business and its various programs at appropriate regional, national and/or international meetings, conferences and forums.
  • Collaborating regularly with the School's alumni director on engagement strategies and tactics requiring communications support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or related field, or another field appropriate to unit being served.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with marketing and communication best practices in all forms of media (i.e. print, digital, social).
  • Proven experience analyzing data to determine effectiveness of advertising campaigns and providing useful, clear, concise reports.
  • Demonstrated supervisory, project management, administration and production experience in a collaborative, productive and creative environment.
  • Demonstrated experience taking initiative, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and making decisions using sound judgment.
  • Proven excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills and techniques, including editing, and ability to work effectively and build effective and strong relationships with faculty, staff, students, external constituents and the media.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible and irregular hours.
  • Willingness and ability to travel in-state and out-of-state in support of school activities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • MBA or relevant advanced degree.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting marketing and communications efforts for a business school within a higher education academic institution.
  • Demonstrated public relations skills including experience writing press releases.
  • Proven knowledge of recruitment and admissions processes.
  • Web development / WordPress / CRM knowledge.
