Computer Technical Support Consultant, UCP 7


The University of Connecticut invites applications for a full-time position as a Technical Support Consultant 2 in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Computer Support Group (CSG). Under the direction of the CLAS Director of IT and the Director of the Brain Imaging Research Center (BIRC) the candidate will provide primary support for the computing infrastructure needs of BIRC's day-to-day operations as well as assisting the CSG with other technological needs within the College. UConn recently opened the 3,200 square foot Brain Imaging Research Center, dedicated to cognitive neuroscience research.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Setup and maintain Linux-based virtual machines
  • Deploy, secure, and administer web servers, databases, and other services in a Linux environment
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the team within the CLAS Computer Support Group
  • Take primary responsibility as the local IT contact and support person of the Brain Imaging Research Center
  • Work with the CLAS Computer Support Group, University Information Technology and other applicable resources to meet college and university level standards and state and federal requirements around IT security and compliance issues.
  • Design, implement, secure, maintain and support IT systems to address project needs
  • Maintain data storage and backup systems (Linux, RAID, external and/or networked storage)
  • Maintain desktop computing systems (MacOS and Windows) and their related hardware; troubleshoot and coordinate with vendors or others as needed
  • Install, configure, secure and maintain software (sometimes simultaneous versions) with often complex dependencies
  • Learn to maintain and troubleshoot specialty peripheral computing devices and electronics such as those used in University research settings; troubleshoot and coordinate with vendors or others as needed
  • Provide end user support (training, documentation, consultation, and troubleshooting) on BIRC's and CLAS computing equipment
  • Maintain documentation of IT systems and software setup, configuration and changes.
  • Notify users of changes and possible impacts; coordinate with others as needed
  • Pursue on-going learning in the pursuance of the above duties and responsibilities and other BIRC and CLAS IT needs; cross-training and collaboration with colleagues as well as professional development opportunities will be available

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. B.A. or B.S. in a Computer Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education/training
  2. 3 or more years of relevant experience in IT Support and/or IT systems administration
  3. Proficiency with Linux especially in a multi-user or server environment
  4. Familiarity with Apple's macOS or significant experience supporting iOS devices
  5. Familiarity with MS Windows and/or MS Office
  6. Demonstrated ability to administer production IT such as Apache, IIS, MySQL, MS SQL Server, LAMP, etc.
  7. Ability to work with people, handle technical problems, and develop complex plans
  8. Ability to install and maintain hardware and software
  9. Ability to quickly learn new software, systems
  10. Ability to problem-solve and trouble-shoot under stressful conditions
  11. Ability to tolerate dust exposure and to lift 50 pounds

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Significant Linux sysadmin experience and/or certification
  2. Significant web and/or database administration skills especially in web app stacks (e.g. LAMP)
  3. Scripting and/or web app related programming knowledge (PHP, Python, BASH, TCSH, SQL, etc.)
  4. Experience with macOS and/or Windows in an administrative/support type role
  5. Experience with computer hardware repair
  6. Familiarity with hypervisor technologies (MS Hyper-V, VMWare vSphere, Xen)
  7. Experience with Container technologies or similar (e.g. Docker)
  8. Strong IT skills relevant to the processing, storage, backup and sharing of large datasets (NFS, SMB, SAMBA, SAN, NAS, JBOD, RAID, etc.)
  9. Experience developing, administrating and/or supporting scientific, research or high-performance IT solutions
  10. Experience with Matlab, R, or other scientific computing packages
  11. Experience working with HIPAA covered systems

APPOINTMENT TERMS

The anticipated start date is January 4, 2019. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
